Gunsmithing PTG Bolt Advice

I want to order a PTG bolt directly from PTG's website, but the OD measurement has got me wondering.

If I'm going to send a brand new Remington 700 action to a smith of my choosing to be barreled, what OD should I specify (0.6995" to 0.700") for the bolt and why?

Also, is there any particulars I need to tell the smith about the bolt when I send both the action and the PTG bolt?

I'm assuming the OD measurement will determine how much "slop" is in the bolt and too large of an OD would create the potential for failure if it gets too dirty as the tolerances would be tight?

Caliber will be either 6.5CM or .308Win
Rifle will see tactical matches and hunting...


I was also considering this firing pin assembly (aluminum shroud/Steel pin)...is this the right way to go as well?

On a separate note....does anyone have any photos of PTG's different fluting options? I'm thinking the milled spiral fluting is what I want? I haven't been able to google anything or find it in their catalog.

I have two of the spiral fluted bolts for Savage. The consistency is very good although the flutes are very shallow. As for Diameter, they make them .002 smaller than reciever ID. .002 makes them a lot tighter than factory, but gives enough play for debris etc. I don't believe that there are any other fluting options other than spiral.

Thanks. So what you're saying is that I should go with the "Standard" OD of 0.6995" - which should be about 0.002" smaller than ID of the action?

Then tell the smith (it's going to GAP......) to fit this bolt to the action. They should be able to figure out the rest....?

If Cerakoting the bolt and action you should probably stick with a .6997 OD once the action is trued. If you are possibly going to Melonite or Ionbond you could run a .6998-.700 depending on application.

If its remotely a field use gun, I would stick with a .6997-.6998

**Im not a gun smith but recently had the same questions and this is what I was told by a very reputable smith here. If I got it wrong I'm sure he will correct me and I'll make the correction here.

Your best bet may be to let GAP get the bolt (would not be surprised if they had some in stock) They can measure the race way and get the perfect size bolt for your particular action. Altho Rem's typically run in the .702ish range they can be smaller or bigger. You can also have the race way reamed out for a larger bolt. GAP will be able to give you the options.

Ok, thanks for the input... The rifle would be cerakoted...didn't think of that part.

I was trying to avoid GAP having to get involved with the part as I didn't want to extend delivery time....but, it's probably a better (and safer) idea that I leave it up to them.

I'm assuming you want bigger flutes for aesthetics? You don't have any drag or feeling like the bolt is hanging due to the flutes? They don't have any sharp edges or anything? (sorry lots of questions)

If it were me....I would have GAP take care of the bolt...that way everything is matched for a perfect fit. Give us some pics when it's all done

You need to call your gunsmith and find out how big they ream the action to, then you can make a decision on what size the bolt needs to be. I would ask them what they suggest for clearances and go with that personally.

I just replaced the stock Remington 700 SA bolt with a PTG one piece with standard OD and boltface for .308 with the Sako extractor. I also went with the small firing pin. The stock bolt cracked at the extractor and it was a good excuse to upgrade. The fit is much better, as to be expected, and accuracy seems to have improved. I Duracoated the bolt after having it fitted by my gunsmith and fit and operation are flawless.

Might want to re-think those numbers - you are talking about a range of 0.0003" (which is basically nothing in the context of this conversation). I think you need to adjust the next digit to the left

I went with a nominal-diameter (the 0.6995-0.7000" that PTG lists as a default) on an "RR"-series receiver on a recent build. The bolt fit without doing any reaming, but was pretty sticky (even prior to coating) until I spent an hour or so of quality time lapping it into the raceway. For a future hunting or "serious" tactical build, I might be tempted to open up that clearance another couple thou; maybe 0.697" would be the way to go, but that could vary somewhat according to the exact raceway dimensions (another rifle around here has a G-series receiver, and was a couple thou looser with the exact same bolt that I mentioned above).

I don't know what capabilities GAP has in this regard (I'm guessing they far, far exceed my own!), but it's probably wise to order the bolt slightly on the larger side and have them ream/lap the raceway to fit. Give 'em a call - I'm pretty sure they can tell you what will work with their build process.

I have purchased a few PTG bolts for Remington tac rifle builds with un reamed action raceways. The bolt diameter I have consistently used has been .698", and the bolts and receivers have been Gun Coated. The function is fine,smooth and no sticking and just a touch less play than a factory bolt. I also have a single shot Remington set up as a iron sight target rifle that runs a .700" PTG bolt (un coated) with spiral flutes that also functions well but the fit is noticeably tighter-no sticking but this rifle is not exposed to a lot of dirt or dust either. My receivers were measured but not reamed.

I was wanting to ask this same question. Somebody mentioned for me to make sure I got a steel pin but the shroud didn't matter.

Awesome, thanks kiff. Any particular reason you don't offer stainless bolts? If I went with a SS Remington action, it makes sense to go with a SS bolt....or is CM the way to go?

Stainless receivers and Titanium receivers seam to work great with the Steel one Piece coated bolts but I do have a couple of stainless bolts in the works for Remington 700 . One has a Winchester/ Savage squared front push feed head and the other has a Ruger , Winchester long type controlled extractor , and the Standard 700 we will make also . I will not leave a stone unturned wen it comes to reamers or rifle Parts you need . Thanks Dave

Talk to the gunsmith who is going to true the action.
Get all your specs from him.
Otherwise you are just guessing and that is a waste of money.

Thanks for the response. Please let me know if you get a chance to check your notes for a hard number. The bolt has already been headspaced with a new barrel, so I am married to it now.


Dave, are you able to turn down a customer's bolt in a situation like mine? It has already been headspaced, and I may want it turned down a 2-3 thousandths in diameter.

Bringing this back up as there are ALOT of options for those bolts!

For a .300WM (LA) bolt in a Rem 700 hunting & range weapon:


Swept handle? What does the 11 degree sweep allow?

Bolt Face? 0.55 ? (.300 WM)

OD? SO if I am going to have it cerakoted or melonited then go with 0.6995?

It appears that a Large SAKO Extractor is a better choice?

Fluting? Is this a performance enhancer (bolt lightening, surface area) or ...?

Small pin hole. due to the primer deformations as noted above - or Large pin hole and a larger (more filling) firing pin?

No, the m16 for mini and 16 is a better choice the Seiko, fluting is probably 80 percent cosmetic with a little bit on the lesson surface area what does help with dirt the swept handle would be equivalent to an OEM Remington the straight handle gives you more leverage 4 opening

I would probably go with the smaller firing pin hole and then have the gunsmith fit

You would need to have the bolt headspaced by a gunsmith. This is best performed when doing a truing job on your rifle. Talk to the guys at PT&G.
