Are the 700 SA bolts worth the money? Do they come with an extractor? I know you have to get the firing assembly, etc, but what about the extractor?

Before I spend 150 on the factory bolt just wanting to know. Thanks

This.

If you already have a Remington bolt that works, it's not worth it to replace. But if you ever have to replace a bolt (for whatever reason), then a PTG bolt is miles better, for no more money.

what would you be spending $150 on the factory bolt for?

Re: PTG bolt worth the money?

Just had a PTG bolt installed on a 700. It is very nice and looks sharp with the flutes and the straight bolt handle. I had to remove a bit of material in bolt handle cutout on the McMillan, but no big deal. Touched up the stock filler with some brush-on enamel black- pretty sharp for jackleg wannabe.

Re: PTG bolt worth the money?

Totally, because we put in oversized PTG bolts and recut the raceways. Much better fit and they make the oversized bolts any size you want. IMO makes the Rem 700 even better

Re: PTG bolt worth the money?

Well I have a bolt, but have it sold for $150. I figured for another $150 I'd be better off with a new bolt than having a bolt knob installed and flutes in the future.

What do you think? Go for PTG?

What about competetive edge? If I get one from Midway or something will it be oversized and fitted when it gets trued and the new barrel screwed on??

Re: PTG bolt worth the money?

what if the new bolt doesn't headspace correctly? do you have funds planed for fixing that if it doesn't?

i'd leave your bolt alone until you are ready to rebarrel. even then, i'd probably keep it unless i had a specific reason to change it like a different bolt face.

Re: PTG bolt worth the money?

Sorry I haven't made myself very clear. This is a new build. I have a donor SPS action w/original bolt. I will end up wanting it fluted and a knob added, because I like to tinker. After I do that I'll have a fancied up factory bolt when I could have had a custom one piece for the same price.

This is going to be built with an un-touched Bartlein 6.5 barrel. Would it make sense to sell the factory bolt as is for $150 and buy a fluted PTG off of Midway with the additional money it would take to make the factory one how I would like it??

Re: PTG bolt worth the money?

Yes if paying the money to build a new rifle, the money for a PTG bolt isn't much. Its nice if your smith can ream the raceway out to be more consistent and a little tighter around the bolt too. Like opened to .705" and order the bolt .701" or .700"

Here's the one I've been looking at. I can't seem to find any oversize ones in stock anywhere. I haven't called PTG, but looks like they are way backordered according to their site.

Re: PTG bolt worth the money?

You can order larger ones. Doesnt look like that one it though. Looks like its .697 or so like factory bolts since it says it's a "drop in"

I wonder how many people have bought one of those and literally tried to "drop it in" to their factory 700 without fitting it.
Thats a dangerous claim their making with that statement. More than just headspace needs to be checked, and some people Im sure dont even read down far enough to see the warning about headspace.

I believe I have read before that ptg supplies many custom action makers with their bolts

Re: PTG bolt worth the money?

If you need, or want to change teh bolt and go with a one piece, PTG is a great piece. I have used several of them and they worked well.

If it's going into a new build, I'd suggest doing it right. As Keith mentioned, have your smith ream the raceway and have to bolt in the appropriate diameter to fit the new raceway. That maintains all your tolerances.

You can order them with the extractor you want, ejector, bolt handle and knob but you'll have to specify those components when you order.
