Is anyone running the pulsar rxq30v? I’m looking to get started into night hunting and want to get into a decent thermal on a budget. I don’t really care for onboard video it’s cool but not really a necessity for me right now. Just looking for a decent thermal for shots no farther than 2-300 yards. All the atn reviews say the electronics are junk. Anything I’m missing for around 2k?

I have had mine close to 9 month now. It’s a great little thermal I think. I bought mine on a sale and some other promos so mine came out way cheaper then the $1899 asking price. I like to see in empty fields in total darkness and I see heat glows from as far as 1500 yards for elk/cow. And deer around 1000 yards. I use my thermal just for observing the night and havin fun finding nephews and nieces in the dark when they play hide and seek around the yard.

I have one and while it is a great entry into thermal I'd say buy a used XQ38 or XP38. I have seen the XQ38s popping up sub $3k. $2500 and one for $2800 on arfcom with an owlhead and extra battery.

It does have the 50hz refresh and many features from the XQ or XP. The green saves your night vision but IMO makes it harder to pick up or distinguish smaller targets or distant targets. Calling some coyote the other night the XQ38 picked 2 up maybe 6-700 yards but the RXQ couldn't.

I have had one for a couple years now. I would step up to a unit or buy an old used unit that doesn't have fixed focus. I can identify coyotes at 200-300 yds, but for good shot placement it's really a 200 yd and in optic and probably more realistically like a 150 yd and in. It shows very good detail inside of 100 yds, but the inability to change the focus makes everything further pretty grainy. It would be fine for hogs at close ranges, but for calling coyotes it leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. If you hunt a lot at night you will be hooked and end up wanting to upgrade to something in the 3.5k-4k range.

If you think you are going to routinely take 300 yard shots then wait for $ to go 640.

I received one of the first RXQ's in early 2017 and have loved it and filled trailers full of hogs and yotes. Our group has various Pulsar and Armasight 640 thermals as well. We have 3k head of cattle so we have to be damn sure what we are looking at especially by Dec when calves start dropping. None of us has ever shot anything we shouldn't have. Join this facebook group it's 22k members strong and a wealth of knowledge and great for used: https://www.facebook.com/groups/146121072558080/?ref=bookmarks

Cool I will check that out I will keep saving up and just buy once cry once haha as usual nothing a man does is cheap.
If you were in close like I am I'd say RXQ all the way. Longest shot I've taken was 191 and in cool/low humidity weather easily knew it was a hog bang flop. But if your range is 2-300 normally I'd say 640 all the way. Where and what kind of hunting? You may find your daylight distances will translate to night in shorter increments it might be better. On our property in the daylight the closest I've ever come to a yote was probably300 yards even with callers. In the dark it's ~ 100 on average

I’m in western nc so the shots are gonna be close I’d say. Unless I find some big fields and power lines. It will be coyote and fox only.

Go to Cabelas and pick one up as a display model, they give 10% off the reg price. Also come in with a coupon that they send out, sometimes it’s up to 10% off entire purchase. And there you have it, you can get the rx30 for around 16% off. That’s a nice chunk of change saved. Have fun with it for a few years and if you like what your doing, you can always upgrade and keep the rx30 as a scanner, or have one of your buddies come out and join the fun.
