New user here and this is my first post so please don't crucify me. I am looking to purchase a new bolt action rifle, primarily for target shooting, but would like to be able to hunt with it as well. I am not a long range shooter (yet) and have no illusions of going out and shooting long distances on my first day. I digress, I have narrowed my caliber selection down to .308 and am looking at two options, the Remington 700 5r SS, and the Savage 11/111 Long Range Hunter. Both rifles are similar with 24" barrels and weigh right around 8.5lbs. The savage comes with the accu-trigger and has an adjustable muzzle break already installed. I am looking to do this for right around 1K (not including the glass). I'd love to hear some opinions anyone has on either rifle (or any others I should consider). Thanks

5R.
Very good stock, very good barrel, very accurate out of the box while being easy to carry.

Savage model 10 fp in the HS stock would be another excellent choice.

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

I would check out the Tikka Scout Rifle in .308. Cabellas has them on sale right now. A great rifle right out of the box.

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

I'd buy a used Savage 10FP McMillan, which comes in the A3 stock. Used they fetch $800-900.

EDIT: One of the FN SPR rifles in an A3 for $1150 would be sweet too.

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

If by chance you think you may be interested in a 300WM, I'm selling a super clean one. Here is the link. It has 160 rounds down the barrel. I can break up the set if you don't want the scope. I will also sell that case and 8 boxes of Black Hills Match Grade 190 Grain ammo for a good price. Just in case you're interested.

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

The 700 5R is a proven performer. 308 is forgiving to reload for if you decide to get into that and has great match ammo (FGMM 175 or 168smk) if you don't reload.

That setup, a harris bipod, a 20moa base with some good glass, a rear bag and you are off to a running start. Good luck!

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

If you are looking to get a rifle and jump right into hunting/target shooting, your choices are a wash.

The 5R has remarkable accuracy and dependability.

The Savage LRH is *gasp* comparable.

I like the stock on the 5R better than the LRH.

The Savage LRH is lighter.

Pick your poison.

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

Is detachable bottom metal important from the factory? Think about what comes with what for the price. All will shoot very small groups with a good driver.

+1. Spot on. Love my 5R

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

I woudn't get the 5r if i was getting a remington. Buy the varmint (can get them for about 300$) Order a manners or mcmillan stock and some DBM and you'll end up around that 1,000 mark.

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

There was an ADL forsale in Dunhams ad this week and think theres a 40 dollar rebate from remington was $399 with a scope. what about the dicks specials someone posted. Dont know what caliber as the ads are less then descriptive in dunhams

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

get a rem or savage 5r. I saw the 10fp I think in fluted 5r the other day for about $600. the rem is a little more i believe.

Re: purchasing a new rifle, need advice

I was in the same boat. I went to buy a Savage LRH and came back with a Rem 700 5R. Have not shot it yet but it feels really good.

edit, nevermind. you were not speaking of the Rem 5R </div></div>

Read the end. The savage I found in 5r for about $600. The REM in the same was usually a little more as in a couple hundred. And that's used street price. They're bout $800 new anyway. It's just a barrel.
