I'm looking for technically savy opinions of the Winchester Model 70 post '64 push feed rifles. Besides not having crf extractors, were there any other serious problems with these actions? Would a used one in good condition be a decent low budget rifle?

Yes, but the Savage is probably better. As you can skip the gunsmith.

The PF Win70s are perfectly fine actions.

Re: Push feed Winchester Model 70?

Why would not having a CRF extractor constitute a serious issue?

I've been shooting a push feed 70 in F-TR for over six years without a problem.

There is a Savage also available, but I know absolutely nothing about Savage actions. The savage action is labeled as a "110" action and both rifles are chambered in my caliber of choice (300 WM). Suggestions?

"Serious Issue" is poor word choice on my part. Just trying to placate the mauser extracter purists.

None. There is nothing wrong with the post '64 Model 70 push feeds.

I don't even see anything wrong with the push feed system. I have five. My 300 WM 1000 yard traget rifle, a Vietnam era sniper clone, Featherweight in 257, 375 H&H, and the most accurate bolt gun I have, a 243 I built for my wife.

I have other Model 70s pre-64s and the new FN. I like them all, but if I would have to pick the best I'd vote for the FN Model 70s.

I don't have any USRA Model 70s so I can't tell you about them.

Looking for one more, a Model 70 action to put together a 260.

Re: Push feed Winchester Model 70?

Nice thing about Savage is the modular nature of them. With $100 in tools, you can swap barrels yourself. A number of outfits sell pre-chambered barrels in dozens of cartridges ready to go. Also, starting with a 110, you can swap parts and run it in any configuration from 300WM down to 223.

Downside to the Savage, for many people, is the feel. They seem a bit cheap, though function is good.

For a budget BUILD, Savage wins. For a budget rifle to use as is, the Win70 is nicer.

Re: Push feed Winchester Model 70?

The PF M70's are fine actions but if you can find one of the CPF M70's, grab it. The Control Push Feeds have a fixed blade ejector, which I prefer.

My Win M70 preference list:
First Choice: CRF
Second Choice: CPF
Third Choice: PF

Re: Push feed Winchester Model 70?

I have had for at least twelve years a Mod 70 push feed in the standard black composite stock and in stainless.
Took it to a good gunsmith and he did a bedding job and a trigger job for me.
Accurate as all hell, all day long always less than 1 moa with every factory round I have shot. And I am not the greatest shot to begin with.
Easy to take down for cleaning and as reliable as the sun.Superb hunting weapon, could not care less about rain cold or mud.
