PVA prefit

I’m going to place an order for a bighorn origin tonight. I was looking at a pva prefit barrel but someone mentioned to me that I might look elsewhere due to lead times on it. What should I expect on time?

Also, is the pva going to much better than a criterion prefit?

I have 2 PVAs and 1 Criterion. Both shoot great. The lead time for PVA could be 12-16 weeks. Maybe longer.

I ordered a mausingfield prefit on 9/9. So I’m at 16 weeks and haven’t seen it yet. So I think the 12-16 weeks maybe right.

I'm at 16.5 weeks. I was supposed to get an update a number of weeks ago. No response to email. I got a call back on December 7th I believe. Was supposed to get a call back the next Monday (December 10). Never got one.
This is for a 6BR medium Palma barrel for a nucleus, cerakoted black, and threaded. Nothing special.

If I had to guess (and that's all it'd be), I'd say that Josh probably has his hands full with fulfilling JHR orders.

I am impressed with my PVA prefit. Headspaced at .002 and has shot very well. I had a criterion that I couldn’t make shoot.

I was shopping around for a prefit and sent PVA an email to see if they had anything on the shelf ready to go. I was looking for a 22” 6.5 CM barrel threaded 5/8-24. They had a few barrels in stock one being a 26” 6.5 CM. I jumped all over it and recieved my barrel in about a week. Might be worth a shot to send them an email if you aren’t too picky on what you want.

Last week I ordered an Origin and a PVA prefit on the same day, I hadn't really looked into the lead times for PVA but I figured that both the action and barrel would probably take a bit to get to me so I'm not too worried about it

16 to 20 weeks is what I waited but the button rifled Rock Creek shoots very well. The contouring job is a little wonky but idgaf. If you want to save $300 buy with confidence. If you want it soon buy a barrel and take it to a local Smith. (If you need a good Smith recommendation, PM me)

M24 is what I requested. You can see it was contoured in stages, not a smooth taper. It kinda has an ant eater look, but for a barrel that shoots great and cost under $500, that I'm going to run thru in 8 months it doesn't matter.

You’re right. That does look a little wonky. I’m surprised they let that out the door. Glad to hear it shoots great! I’m saving my lunch money to throw down on a nucleus B/A from them

I paid a deposit on a Nucleus barreled action in May. I then got impatient with ARC and Nucleus delivery extensions, so I rolled the deposit over on a Kelbly’s Atlas Tactical Barrel. Had Southern Precision Rifles ship the action to PVA mid-July. Was invoiced for the balance in early December. Had the barreled action on the 15th. My heavy Palma Barrel has the same stepped contour. It almost looks like it has two tapered sections. Like, it’s a heavy palma just ahead of the recoil lug, then it’s a medium Palma halfway down the barrel. I can post pics soon. It seems to shoot well, but I was initially concerned with that weird contour. Also, they (PVA) quoted 11 weeks when I sent the action in July.

I'll make another ditto for Keystone Accuracy - John does phenomenal work and almost all of the time has kreigers on the shelf for exactly what ou need. Plus his barrels shoot lights out!

Oh and I've gotten all my barrels in under two weeks, most under a week.

I've used Keystone going on 5 years and will vouch for his work and lead times. He also has the lowest price shouldered cut-rifled prefit on the market.

I've only done cut for myself. I purchased a button for practice barrel but never got around to shooting it. He has some nice groups from a button 6.5x47 on his Facebook now.

I shot these groups with one of his Kreiger barrels 2" outside to outside on the 500 yd paper target. Didn't measure the 600yd, but it's tight. Very little load development done.

Any updates on photos? I'm a bit concerned as I also ordered a barreled action (Nucleus with shouldered Barloc) from PVA with M24/M40 countour. Also added Cerakote.

I'm with you. That's some surprisingly shitty work coming out of PVA. Unless it was sold at a discount I wouldn't have taken it

200 yard target from yesterday testing a load on my latest keystone barrel. 8-10 mph fishtail, no cherry picked groups. Really tough to keep them even somewhat close together as wind was shifting and nothing shot worse than .4x, one was .3x. Good conditions it will shoot .2s. Not terrible from a prefit lol.

It shoots sub 1" at 300yds. Yes, the contouring is rough but it is also roughly $200 cheaper than most other's prefits. Beleive me, I'm no PVA fanboy but show me a prefit barrel that costs less than $500 and shoots sub 1" groups at 300yds and I will concede.

Your barrel, money, and standards man. Function over form rules all. I'd still want my barrel contoured properly.

Why are you so hellbent on proving that your barrel is the bees knees? IDGAF how it shoots and I still think it looks like shit. *I* would not have accepted the barrel. What *YOU* do can be different and that's ok. Like I said, I'm glad you're happy with it.

Any of the competent gunsmiths that have great reputations will put out a barrel that will produce groups every bit as good as that with a load tuned for it.

All my barrels definitely shoot at a minimum that good, and they look good while doing it.

I don't have any dog in this fight, and I would assume that PVA will make this right based off the stunning reputation they have acquired. But let's not pretend that these PVA barrels are the only barrels that can achieve that accuracy.

@reubenski you have a PM incoming, I'll take care of it. We do contour in "halves" but typically without a set of calipers you can't tell where the flip is, especially on an M24. Something went awry there, we'll get it fixed up for you.

@grizzaws same, you have a PM. a Med palma section in the center would look like a dogbone, about 0.11" small in diameter anywhere this happened along the taper.

Hellbent? that's a little bit of hyperbole don't you think? I have 10 barrels for this rifle. I like to try different barrels from different manufacturers. I have a 16" 300BO McGowen with a pinned barrel nut. Costs $475, shooting 1MOA at 50yds is struggle with it. A 20" 6.5 Grendel McGowen pinned barrel nut prefit that costs the same, shoots 3/8" at 100. 2 x cut-rifled Dashers($800ea), 2 x cut rifled 6SLR's, a 29" cut rifled 308 Palma barrel, 223 cut-rifled trainer, and this 6BR. I just bought a 6 Creed cut-rifled prefit from Keystone ($716). By no means is this my first barrel I'm in love with and by no means am I some sort of PVA fanboy. Not trying to prove it's the best thing since sliced bread but I'll take a wonky contour for sub 1" groups at 300. Calling it shitty work bc it has some barely visible contouring artifacts is just being careless with your mouth. I actually regret bringing it up bc I didn't mean to start a PVA-bashing session. I'm pretty happy with it and now I feel responsible for some of this hate and anger. jeez, just reel it back in a little...




You need to reread that post Sarge. The majority of my barrels shoot that. But none of them costs less than $500. How many of your barrels cost less than $500 can do that? You missed that salient point that I hung my statement on. you think I'm amazed that it shot less than third minute at 300 and am saying that you have to buy his barrel to acheive that. not the case. I'm saying that for a budget button rifled barrel it shoots exceptionally well but buyer beware, does have some cosmetic, rough edges (figuratively guys, jeez!). If you run thru a lot of barrels and don't even bother to wipe off the gunsmith markings then probably a great solution for you.

Yes, Josh contacted me to offer a replacement for the barrel. I'm going to tell him no, bc I don't want to waste 200rds (100 on that barrel and probably something like that on a new barrel) making up lost ground for the sake of cosmetics. It still has magic marker on it for instructions to my smith to cut the wrench flats. I'm going to apologize to Josh for starting this by even mentioning the contouring bc you guys can't hold your liqueur(joking)

I had zero hate for PVA prior to seeing your barrel. Nothing has changed since seeing your barrel. I actually have a couple of orders in with them that I'm looking forward to getting. Note that I said I was surprised with the shotty work. I was pretty certain they would offer to make it right when they saw it and they did. My statements were all about cosmetics and what is acceptable to me. You're the one pushing that it should be ok because the barrel shoots. Again, that is your standard. Mine is different. So enjoy your barrel bro.

My PVA bbl has a similar step in it's contour.

I thought about bringing it up to them but figured I was being too picky and should just live with it. Shoots fine.

I do feel a bit better knowing I'm not the only one.

UPDATE

I've made a few more trips to the range with my PVA barreled action. It continues to exceed my expectations with regard to accuracy and consistency. I've had some correspondence with Josh regarding the tapered and parallel sections of my heavy Palma contour, and he's patiently and courteously explained that the contour is a reflection of the work-holding set-up they employ for CNC machining. The exterior finish on the barrel and threads is exemplary and I'm really not concerned with the look of the contour so long as it's concentric to the bore along its length, and I believe that it is. I intend to give PVA my barrel business again in the future and I've recommended them to friends. The "medium Palma section" I referred to in previous posts was misleading; there's no undersized section anywhere along the contour, and it tapers from breech to muzzle.

Last pva prefit took 17 weeks. If you have time, they are a good deal. Odds are 4-6 months out. They are decent people who make a good product, just seem to have a huge backlog.

PVA did a good job, I have a couple barrel from PVA, they did a good job. ( I never wait for 10+ weeks, actually just for 1-2 weeks)
If you do not want to wait for that long time and need a barrel from PVA, you could pay an extra rush fee.
Some people said it worth to wait.
But I dislike waiting.
So I find another gunsmith can do better quality and faster.
