So I’m getting a gun related Christmas present this year. Told my family to skip the gift cards to places I don’t like and go in together and get a Patriot valley arms Tripod.

The question what ball head or what do I need?

I have a Mpa 6.5 with weight system and want to mount it with a rrs head ( I think). I’ve looked and read and have confused myself on what I need.

Need some help thanks.

Almost forgot I have a Tikka CTR in a manners t6a. Is there an adapter to mount this somehow? It is just the plain bottom no mounting points but I have seen pictures on here of rifles on tripods mounted with something like a vise.

I think the RRS anvil is going to be tough to beat as a ballhead style mounting system. You could always put an Area 419 arcalock rail on the bottom of your Tikka if you didn't want to go the pig/hog saddle route for that rifle

I have the PVA tripod and love it. I went with a RRS TA-3 leveling base rather than ball head, mostly for weight and the fact that the anvil-30 was damn near impossible to find in stock. I'll get a pic and post it when I get back today.

I have the PVA tripod with a RRS TA-3 leveling base. I got an Abel table also. This past weekend shot the Fix off the Abel table from 400 to 700 yards, very stable and was really pleased with the results. I also have a RRS direct clamp on my Tikka but haven't got a chance to try it yet.

Thanks for the help.

Pictures help. How stable is the clamp? My Tikka CTR with the manners is rear heavy with the adjustable cheek piece. Wondering if that will work or need to mount some kind of direct attach on the stock.

PVA tripod. This is my first and only foray into the tripod life. I'm confident I did it right and I don't foresee any issues or reasons to move to any other setup. I've not messed with the other attachment options out there but I say go RRS BH-55 or go home. It's sweet.

The direct clamp seems extremely stable, I have only dry fired with it. Hope to get out this weekend to give it a try.

I have the PVS tripod and ball head. The tripod is much better than the ball head, not that the ball head doesn't work or anything but the RRS ball head I got to replace it just feels sooooooooooo much smoother for tensioning just right and more stable.

The tripod is good stuff, and I don't see me replacing it with anything else.

Anvil or TA-3. Cant think what a ballhead would give you over either of those for 99% of scenarios

What are the pros/cons of the anvil compared to the leveling base? 15 degrees on the leveling base is enough for me, is there any other advantage to the anvil? I think the leveling base uses a larger ball size so I would think it would be more stable and smoother.

Good question. I'm a bit confused on all the different types, These aren't cheap so I don't want to have to sell and buy again.

Have a PVA tripod on order and looking at these heads myself. For me the advantage of the anvil 30 is it accepts dovetail and pic rail, also rated for 35lbs vs 25lbs.
I think I would like the leveling base but don't want to change over all my rails.
Maybe a new leveling base will show up at shot show.

I didn’t know the anvil does pic rail and dovetail. If I bought this one do I need anything else to fit this to the pva tripod?

I just looked and the anvil 30 is out of stock everywhere. Anybody know where this is in stock?

I used @Darkside-Six RRS Tripod that had the TA-2 at a match this year and I can not see how a ball head could ever be as ridged as the TA, since then I have used the TA-3 at two other matches from very accommodating competitors... They were a very solid lock up and dampened vibration down to a level I have not seen before. Zero problems supporting a 17 pound rifle as far out as my MPA chassis forend would allow. Needless to say, I've got both a PVA Tripod and a TA-3 in the mail as we speak. Good bye Manfrotto! I'll use you for non shooting stuff.

Was there a huge difference between TA-2 and TA-3? One looks significantly larger than the other.

I switched from the Feisol ball head to TA-3 on my PVA tripod and it made a huge difference.

With out them side by side to compare, it would be difficult to say. Both were great. Going from my memory the TA-3 might have a very slight advantage as it sits lower in the saddle. I wouldn't feel the need to up grade from one to the other, they are both excellent.
