So I've been using the PVS-30 with an AMG on my bolt gun and the little beer coozie looking thing to block light out goes on that setup just fine.

Question is on my AR, I am running a
1-6 Vortex so the front of the scope is much smaller and makes it difficult to put that piece on.

One friend suggested cutting a piece of foam to slip on the Viper to make the dia the same which seems like it would work well.

My other thought is just running without the cover. I haven't tried this yet to see what difference it makes.

Anyone with experience on a similar setup or someone that runs without the light cover. How does it compare?

Running without the cover works when it is 'dark' ... but sometimes the moon can squeak in there and cause some issues with 'glare'. But I mostly find it good for keeping out rain, snow, ice, like that from getting in to those inner facing lenses.

I've used electrical tape, though it can leave some sticky. I cut a hole in a sock. And I've gone without. Mostly go without these days.

There that's a pic (from about 4 years ago) of a clipon with a tape shroud.

I agree with Wig on this, on nights with a 1/2 or more moon without the cover there is some light gain between the two optics and a slight loss of performance. This is most noticeable with my 1.1-8.
I havent had any issues using the coosie with the 1.1-8
