Hello all,
Recently acquired a pvs27 and was looking through it last night for the first time and giggling the whole time. Do you guys typically run an IR illuminator on a bolt gun with a clip on? It was a pretty dark night in a rural area and I noticed at some distances with higher magnification it was a little dark. Sorry if it is a

On the darkest nights you literally can't see anything past 50 yards, even with the best tube in your 27. Placement can be a bit of a pain in the ass, especially if you don't have ape arms, but you need one.

for the price, the luna elir with the filter removed seems to be an amazing value for what you get. Im sure others will chime in, but I saw one saturday night, and it lit up the whole range and could even be focused down to a laser beam style. I am wanting one even though I dont shoot that far.

ehhh i dont know about that. ive never seen it dark enough for my 27 to be useless passively even at 300-400yd on the darkest of nights. maybe triple canopy jungle but dont have any here....

Perhaps a bit of hyperbole, but around here it is not difficult to find dark hollows where, on the darkest nights you really don't get much out of passive clip on over 100 meters or so. Can you see things, yes? But not to the point I would be willing to shoot at something. On the same night, in a flatter area where the horizon is sky and not hill or trees, you can see OK.

All of that to say a good illuminator is a necessity.
Even on bright nights, things can hide in the shadows, it is just how NV works.

I use a TNVC torch pro and have been quite happy. I haven't used the luna but it looks smaller/lighter. It also looks to have a plastic body to the torch's aluminum.

Lastly, if considering an IR laser and iluminator, get a tape switch that works with both, that is absolute titties in the setup. Once you run a single-button-activation system, you will never want to go back to the old ways again.

Once Jay puts the finishing touches on my >2700 FOM L3 WP PVS-27 I’ll compare it directly to my >2376 WP L3 M2124LR using the same optics (2x SB PMII 3-27x56) side-by-side with the same illuminator.

Will be interesting. JW really needs to get his prodigious posterior down here. 😋

Mine is >2600 from Jay, not >2700, but I will say it is much better in the dark dark than other clip ons I've used. From 35% moon up it is the nuts, but even at a little light, it is really good. As compared to my ex 2124lr and PVS30 it is a joke.
