Rifle Scopes Pwer Scope t yard ratio?

What power to yards ratio is best?

For instance..... would a 8-32 x 56 be usable for 100 yrds. If you did use it, it would be like it was 12.5 yards in front of you without a scope right? thanks

No best. Just better for the intended use and personal preference. People shoot 1000 yards with iron sights.

Pick what works for you.

I decided to use my nightforce on a different rifle so now i have to buy on for my barrett98 i was going to just get a 5.5-22 x 56 again but i figure why not get a 8-32 x 56 if it wont hurt and give me a higher power. ive never looked thru a 8-32 x 56 scope though so it worries me..

The greater magnification lets you see the target better, but you also see your "wiggle" better. Too much magnification makes it hard to aquire and keep a target if you are shooting off-hand or at moving targets. Benchresters use all the way up to 42 power and some swear by it. Tactical guys typically use 10 to 20 power, hunters typeically use 3 to 12 power. Of course if it's a variable scope you don't HAVE to look at the target at the highest power. But the minimum power goes up too as the higher power goes up, if you get my meaning.

Dont forget mirage appears worse the higher the power

Why limit yourself with 50 or 65 MOA of elevation when you can have the 100 of the 22x?

With this statement; Don't forget the exit pupil factor at the higher powers will severely diminish the available light. If you think you'll be in a hunting or shooting situation near dusk, don't plan on 32x being advantageous by any means.

Excellent point. Something else to think about is the amount of internal elevation. The 5.5-22 has 100 MOA and the 8-32 has around 65. For a long range rifle like a Barrett I would go with the 5.5-22. I have used the 5.5-22 on a CheyTac and shot to 2000 yards and only had it on around 17 power. On a 98B the 5.5-22 would be my choice. Set that in a set of the Barrett EX Rings with 40 MOA and you can shoot as far as that round will go.
