I checked the FAQs and didnt see this covered although I bet it has been many times. Sorry.
Just received my SN3 for my LMT NWS. Now its time to get her mounted. I am on the fence about a QD style mount that seems all the rage these days on any flat top AR style rifle. I can see the benefits in it but honestly how often does a scope fail where you are likely to need to quickly pull it off and transition to irons. Heck most dont even have a BUIS on them. That being said because of the height needed to clear a 58mm objective on a monolithic upper there arent too many traditional ring options for 35mm tubes. The QD mounts provide the height needed but do put the rings closer than I would prefer to the EREK knob on my USO. Traditional rings can obviously be spaced out as far as necessary. I will get it mocked up tomorrow but I figure I need roughly 1.5" from the top of the rail to the midpoint on the rings. Thems are some tall rings!. My second question is that with traditional rings, what are the trade offs between aluminum and steel besides a few ounces? I am always scared to death to strip aluminum even with a torque wrench.
I have good money in this rifle and scope, I will not go cheap on the mounts. I welcome your input on style, material and vendor.
