I agree with the 18"-20" length. I chose the 20" because it had a rifle length gas system and the 18" had a mid-length one.

Here's my philosophy on AR's. As originally designed, it's a very finely balanced (features balanced in harmony with each other) system; and like most systems, that balance tends to go away when one chooses to alter the basic features away from the original plan. I'd like to think I can figure out valid improvements, but truth is, I'm just not shrewd enough to pull that off. Some here are, and I admire their skills greatly. It would be pointless for me to put up pictures of my guns because they're just so conventional. My viewpoint is that the skill comes first, and that such skill just might save a lot of cash that would otherwise be spent on mechanical improvements. I think the barrel and the trigger are the most crucial features aiding accuracy, and that that's all kinda wasted if the skill isn't there to begin with. That's where I do my spending. Sights are the very last part of the equation, and they need to be adequate, not ostentatious.

As for magnification, there are limits and they're not so broad as some might think. Distance makes mirage more pesky. This requires that mags be stepped down so the target doesn't dance too wildly. Oddly (perhaps), higher mags are more useful when distances are considerably shorter (100yd, and 200yd at most). For decades, I shot long distances with 6-24 magnification; and at 1Kyd, I seldom used higher than 18x. I have a pair of (identical) Mueller scopes with an upper mag limit of 32x, but that's for my varmint rifles; and the 32x is really only used inside 100yd.

BTW I have been digressing far and wide since after my first sentence, and none of what followed was in response to Rob.

Exactly Gregg... very well stated. Shit rifle stirs up the guys. Give a man a slinging 168SMKs an auto 400yds is a good thing.

FYI: Friendly reminder of the recent warnings here at SH about hacked accounts. Data breaches on other sites released the passwords of their members, who may post using the same screen name and using the same passwords on multiple firearm sites. Older dormant accounts with a flurry of recent activity can be a sign. Not accusing anyone, just sayin'.

Just go to whatever big box sporting goods store is local and still sells ar rifles. Pick out a 308 you like, grab an optic, and go shoot. In the tier you are shopping in, there won’t be a hair’s breadth difference in reliability between them. You don’t need to worry about durability because you don’t plan to shoot it enough to burn out the original barrel. For your intended purposes, the difference in manufacturers comes down to roll marks. Pick a pretty one.

rout through pawn shops ? and estate sales most of what ever they are selling is pretty cheap some may be really sweet deals me Id be looking for powder and primers more than guns but if it's nice enough I might try and buy something maybe just for a wood stock or chassis that struck my fancy . pawn shops who knows what they might have on any given Saturday . I have no idea what there is or isn't to be found near you , but best of luck if you do go looking .
