I carry a full size 1911. The biggest mistake people have is buying a $2K 1911 and then throwing it in a $20 holster from uncle mikes, or some other shit outfit like that. If you are gonna spend good money on a gun and the defense ammo for you can at least shell out some more on a nice holster. I have an IWB from 5-shot leather that I picked up from Heirloom Precision. Fit's a full size Wilson Combat and a custom bobtailed springfield wonderfully.

Right on 18. Spend the money on a quality holster. My favorite that I have is a Del Fatti but it looks an awful lot like this one from 5shot (which appears to be a super quality vendor based on the pix and commentary):

I carry in Comptac Minotaurs. I bought the first Minotaur for my XD, and liked it so much that I bought a second one for the 1911 and sold the MSVMII for the 1911, and the 5Shotleather for the XD.

Comptac has a nice kydex lined leather belt that is pretty good, super stiff, but comfy. A really stiff belt helps the most with a heavier gun over the day as it spreads out the load better, they are also more comfy. I'd say using a cheap or too flexible a belt is probably where most make a mistake.

I've had an older 07' wilderness 3 stitch belt and love it but I just got a new 5 stitch belt from them since I'm thinner now and am not impressed with the new one at all. They must have changed their nylon webbing because even my 2 year old frequently used 3 stitch belt is much stiffer than my new 5 stitch belt which is supposed to be even stiffer than my old belt due to the extra stitching. So whatever they have done, they sacrificed a lot of belt stiffness. It appears they went to a looser weave thinner nylon webbing somewhere along the way. It's obvious over the length of a day as well that the new belt is not nearly as good at bearing a vertical gun load.

The shorter barrel can be more comfy if you do a lot of sitting especially in vehicles but it depends on where you carry and your build too. I've found that a 4.25" barrel with a full size frame with a bobtail conceals as well as the officers size frame, but the longer full size grip in the front allows for faster more accurate grip acquisition on the draw.

Build is a definite factor. For me a five inch is much more comfortable when sitting. My three inch digs into my hip. Not to bad, but enough to remind you it's there. Maybe I should lose a little hip.

I have the same issue with a glock 27, it will dig into my hip bone depending on the holster when seated due to the short barrel. So yeah too short can be just as bad as too long. I'd imagine I'd have the same issue with a 3" 1911.

I just replaced my SA Micro's recoil springs with Wolff +power springs for Kimber UCP. The only complaint I've had with the Micro is some few and far between FRTB's when dirty, hopefully the new springs will alleviate that.
I'm going to try a High Noon MrSofty for appendix IWB carry if I have the bugs out. I've taken to AIWB carry with my P3AT and really like it.
