i don't know much about how the barrel extension is attached to the barrel

so my question is. once the barrel extension is attached to the barrel is it permanent ?

i have a barrel and the when it is placed in the upper the gas hole is off center by about 1/8". I know the gas hole is permanent it is drilled but can the barrel extension be moved so the hole is centered.

Re: question about barrel extension

can just don't want to wait a month or more. this is not a precision machine. it will never have a scope on it. the gas block will be hidden under the hand guard so it will never be seen. if it comes down to it i will just put it on a little crooked.

i was just wondering if i could take it to the smith and have it done if not i don't care. once the barrel is burnt i will put a new one on but i'm not waiting a month for a new one.

reality is if i send it back chances are they will just do what i want to do and re align the extension why wait a month for that

Re: question about barrel extension

I think you might have problems running it as is.

Usually the extension is installed and then the gas port is drilled in the proper location.

I wouldn't necessarily have confidence in the suppliers ability to get this right the second time either.

Is there something special about this barrel, or could you order one from say BCM and have it in the time it takes to be shipped and then deal with getting a refund from the original barrel's supplier?

ETA: You posted while I was typing. What was the answer?

Re: question about barrel extension

well i took it to my smith this morning and he can do it it is going to require the extension to be removed and he will have to put it in a lathe and remove a little from the barrel in order for it to align he says about an hour for the fix.

there is nothing super special about the barrel. it is a black hole weaponry 16" m4 poly3 and i am more than sure it would be handled by them "IT IS MY IMPATIENCE THAT HAS PUT ME DOWN THIS ROAD" i just don't want to wait i hate waiting in line, in traffic,at the doctors office, and just hate waiting for things to come in the mail. so i will give it to my smith(who is a very good smith) and pay him a few dollars to have it Monday. problem solved.

Re: question about barrel extension

it is nice! his place looks like a little shack on the side of a back road. but you walk in and he has several gun lathes and some end mills in there he rely knows what he is doing i have been using him for years and have never been disappointed.
