I bought a NIB Rem. 700p in .308 that was purchased in 1997 and never fired. It has a leupold 4.5 X 14 40mm Tac w/ mil-dot reticle. It was bought at same time. I have used the search option for this rifle here but have not really had a good answer to this. My question are: is there any thing I should know that is peculiar to this rifle I should address or consider to improve it's out of the box performance. I am willing to put in the time to find a good load and such. I am just looking for a heads up on any weaknesses from this model and time of production. Thanks for any help you can provide.

burn the barrel up by shooting it, dont over clean it, bed the action to the stock if you havent already. Adjust the trigger if needed or have a smith do it if you dont feel comfortable. Other than that enjoy it and shoot the piss out of it

Thanks Deadly. Straight advice I can use. My understanding is it comes pillar bedded. Does it still need glasbedding as well? As far as the trigger.......this thing feels like nails on a chalkboard. I am pretty mech minded. Is the adjustment procedure strictly gunsmith only?

If its pillar bedded i would still skim bed it just to make sure that the action has a perfect mating surface with the stock. As for the trigger, its not that hard, but you can make the rifle really unsafe if you dont know 100% what you are doing give me a second to find a link that talks about adjusting the old style remington trigger

just make sure when you adjust it if you do, to push the bolt forward with a good amount of force to make sure the firing pin doesnt drop ( do it a dozen or so times) and then close the bolt with the firing pin cocked and the safety on and off, and slam the butt into the ground to make sure the FP doesnt drop

Thanks RAD. My next post was going to start on loads. There seems to be plenty of loads posted but you think 155's over 168/178's with the 1:12?

yes run either the 155s or the 175s, the 168s can get to 1K but not as easily as the 155s or 175s. Also look at the Hornady AMax projo those are good to

If your fairly new to shooting, especially precision shooting I would leave it as is and shoot the piss out of it before you mess with it. I have a factory 700p 308 that shots absolutly amazing and I have still yet to modify it. I would spend your time shooting. When you cant shoot read up on everything you can about shooting especially the fundamentals and don't forget to dry fire. When you get to the point that you do not see any improvement in your groups then you may have reached the accuracy limitations of this rifle, then do some work to the rifle. I will pretty much guarantee you will rebarrel this rifle before you get to the point where you will see the small improvements you will see from bedding the rifle or anything else. Even if the trigger isn't perfect don't spoil yourself with a perfect rifle right away its about the fundamentals not the equipment. Its my opinion that too many people try to have everything perfect right away and in return I think it can have negative effects on the progress you might see.

Something to know about this rifle is that the throat is extremely long. So if you reload you may not be able to get the bullets seated as close to the lands and groves as you may wish.

Hey MN, does this mean it will shoot as well as everyone says even at COL's at magazine length? Do VLD type bullets work as well in that case or better to stay with more mainstream match shapes?

my advice on working up your load. Buy 100 SMK, 100 Berger VLDs, 100 Lapua 155 scenars, 100 Hornady A-Maxs. Load some up of each and see what shoots the best out of your gun. My rem 700 hates Federal Gold Medal Match, but loves the shit out of corbon and black hills. Just because my throat may be long like yours doesnt mean that yours is the same. Your gun may like the VLDs were mine might shoot them like shit. its all about the specific rifle. The loads that are posted in teh reloading section are very basic starter loads. They may or may not shoot well in your gun. I guess in a few words reloading is all about finding the load for YOUR gun. I started shooting mine with 168grn fgmm. I started out most of the time being able to hold under a minute. After a while I got it under 3/4 most of the time with the fgmm. Now I reload my own 155 lapuas and I seat almost as long as I can, and I can't currently use my internal mag. I actually had one of if not my best 5 shot groups with it the other day and it was well under half moa. With hand loads my rifle will hold half moa and sometimes better. I won't guarantee your rifle will do the same but the only way to find out is to get out and give her hell. I have no doubts that at the very least your rifle will hold 3/4 moa with any of the suggested match bullets but I have heard a couple people say there 700p wouldn't hold much under a minute. This could be the rifle, the load, or the shooter.
This is just my opinion but I personally disagree with deadly's basis of developing a load (for right now). I would just pick a match bullet 175 matchkings, 155scenars, 155vld's whatever just pick one bullet and develop a sub minute load for it and get some range time. And yes to your question the vld's are a great choice. After you see some significant improvement in your shooting then look deeper for the best bullet. The object as you begin should be to get a better understanding of the principles involved but most of all to develop sound fundamentals. If you are messing around with too much you may not develop the fundamentals soundly and it is harder to unlearn a bad habbit than to just learn it right the first time. If money is no object I would actually recomend just ordering a few hundered rounds of fgmm to begin.
Also keep in mind not to always be shooting for a group. Go to the range with a plan of something specific to work on. I have found my best improvements have been when I don't shoot specifically for group size.
