Gunsmithing Question on Remington 700 mag extractor

On my Remington factory 700 magnum bolt, the extractor has a very small lip that at times slips over the rim on a 300WM case. The empties just about fall out of the chamber afterwords, defiantly not a pressure or head space issue.
Is there an easy fix or is a Sako or M-16 extractor in my future?
Thanks
Jim

Re: Question on Remington 700 mag extractor

The magnum extractors have the least amount of travel and are the only ones I've had to replace. A new Rem extractor will probably solve your problem or installing an after market extractor. I know some don't like Sako extractors but as long as your not looking into the loading port there is little chance of getting injured even with a case seperation. One issue with the after market extractors is the angle of the case when it is ejected from the action. It will have a higher trajectory and could hit the windage turret on the scope and bounce back into the action. There are ways to lessen the affect but be aware it will be different if you go that route.

Re: Question on Remington 700 mag extractor

Funny you mention extractor problems. Today I ran into a problem with extraction on my 300wm. It was worse with one manufactures brass than the other.
When I got home I realized it was a pinned extractor, being I had no new extractor and wanted to shoot tomorrow again I decided to to a little tweaking on it with out removing it. A little nudging here and bending there and all is good again.
Unfortunately this is the third stock Remington action where the extractor has crapped out on me. From now on I will go with the m-16 style.
I hope it will not eject into my overly large turrets on my night force though.

Re: Question on Remington 700 mag extractor

Just went through this issue on my last build. Tons of work done on the rifle an my dumbass left the factory extractor in it. Sure enough, 100 rds. into load dev. it shat the bed. A new sako type extractor of the lazzeroni size went in and not a single problem since..

Re: Question on Remington 700 mag extractor

As few problems as I've seen with Remington extractors it's always been with the magnums. IMHO, the mini M-16 is the only way to fly and what I'd reccomend. The Sako comes in 2nd to that. Both are good and I havent had a problem with either.

Re: Question on Remington 700 mag extractor

I've had/seen very good performance from the factory extractors. Great ejection angle, very reliable, and less to go wrong.

Like Dave Tooley said a new Rem extractor might solve it. Personally, thats what I'd try first. If it doesn't work you can always have an M16 style put in. Not the other way around though.

Sako style I don't like.

M16 style is great except for the ejection angle as mentioned. Not a huge deal. But(for .473 and .532) I always try to stick with the factory extractors whenever possible.

Those rivets can be a bitch though.
