So I am starting a new rifle build. I’m fairly new to building rifles but have been shooting all my life. I come here today to ask what action should a purchase that is under $1000. I was thinking the Big Horn Origin but I am open to suggestions!

The Origin and the Defiance Tenacity would get my vote. Very happy with my Origin so far.

I have both suggestions above. Pricing is a wash but the the bolt on each action runs a bit different. I prefer Impact actions, so naturally I compare.. The origin I own runs a bit smoother than the tenacity. Either way you really can’t go wrong. Origin will have prefits.... tenacity wont. So that could help your decision making.

yes new tenacity are machined to accept prefits. might just take a bit to catch up to Zermatt etc prefit availability

i only run Zermatt actions. TL3 comp gun. origin long action ELR, RimX 22lr

they're smooth as shit. light bolt lift. interchangeable boltheads. CRF and mechanical eject are my preference. Nitride/DLC

you wont go wrong with either. but to me the options Zermatt has is a big win. I can convert either action to a hunting rig in 10 minutes

What caliber should I go? I was thinking either 6.5 prc or 300 prc.

Of the newer economy based actions, I have the Origin and Nucleus. Selling the Nucleus and buying another Origin. Nothing wrong with the Nucleus, just nothing in it to justify the $150 over the Origin to me. Nucleus wins the beauty pageant, but Origin wins the talent contest.

Oh, and the Origin gives up nothing to my TL3. On paper yes, in use, not a thing. Hope this helps.
