questions about range on a 308 w/20" barrel?

Depends mostly on factors you have not mentioned. Ammo, and scope. To get over 1000 you will need the right choices for both.

I’ve used a 308 out to a mile. It made the switch to 6.5x47 cake. You can reach 1200 easy with 175s I used handloaded TMK or GMM. I was better at a mile with 185 jugs. I had a 20 inch 5r barrel and used it suppressed too. The wind is really rough on a 308

Buddy hit 1160 with the magpul plastic stock, 700 ACC, 20 inch slick barrel, and a 300$ primary arms crap scope

Agree with @diverdon... really depends on all of the factor.

For example: I have a Rem700 20" that shoots great groups with 168gr FGMM, but not so good with 175's.

With the 168grs, I've gotten out to 800yd pretty consistently... if the rifle could stabilize 175's, I think 1000 would be possible

I’ll just pass along my experience. 20” AI running Federal Gold Medal Match. MV trues out very consistent at 2505 fps. Couple the low MV with the fact that we’re at 852’ MSL and typically shooting in a very low to negative DA environment, my experience is that for accuracy and precision, it’s good out to 800 ish. At 1K, you’ll have to call wind to within 1 mph. Tough sledding.

I have a 20" R700 PSS that shoots great all the way out to 1000 with FGMM. But there is no room for error with your wind call.

My experience in similar conditions mirrors that even when using slightly better (ballistics) ammo (my reloads).

My DTA 22" 308 barrel does very well with 168s or heavier out to about 1100, but i'm also over 5K for altitude and typically over 7500 DA, so I can send the 168s a bit further than most. Using the 175s or 178s, I had zero issues stretching their legs

I have a 20” AXMC barrel w 7” Thunderbeast suppressor running jugs and 178 ELD-X at sea level. Works great out to 800 yards. Past that the wind moves it around so the WEZ expands.
However, the barrel life is over 5,000 rounds.

The 6.5 CM barrel w 136 scenars shoots great in competitions out to 1200 yards.

All handloads.

I’ve had a few 308’s with 20” barrels. Here in WY shooting at 6300’ elevation using 175gr FGMM, 1030 yds is the farthest I’ve shot them to. As long as I did my part, I could get 800 yds consistently but hitting that 1030 yd steel target required some good wind calls as already mentioned above. Others have taken their 308’s much further than I have, but 1030 is the farthest I’ve shot mine. I’ve found that past 800, the 308 just drops like crazy and the wind pushes that bullet all over the damn place!? Not the best “long range” round, but it sure does make for good practice?
