Hello, I'll begin by stating that I know very little when it comes to rifles which is why I have come here with this question. I was hoping that someone around here could explain the difference between these two scope bases.
In the first picture, you will notice that the picatinny rail is slightly longer as opposed to the rail in the second picture. Is there any particular reason to have a rail that extends past the mount? Is it so that the base will be compatible with a variety of scopes?
While I have always found the symmetrical base featured in the second picture to be more aesthetically pleasing, I have always been curious as to the purpose of having a longer rail like the one seen in the first picture. Any answers will be greatly appreciated.
