Quick way to stop questions at the range

At the range on Sunday and the guy next to points at my AICS/700 rifle and says "what do you need a rifle like that for?"

I said "it makes me look cool at the range".

He blinked a few times, and then shut up for the rest of the session.

Sure it makes me sound like an ass but I'm getting older and crankier and have no time to defend myself against people that have that "what do you need XYZ" attitude, especially at a range.

Whats wrong with these people that want to limit themselves to the minimum. This lowest common denominator mentality is ruining the country.

Did you return a likewise comment about his Stevens .22?

My problem at the range is that my time is limited and the older guys are eager to suck up my time showing me their rifles. I appreciate their enthusiasm but I start getting antsy when they are bringing the third rifle case out of the truck to show me something else. Had a treat the other day when the latest impromptu gun show revealed an HK 417. Hadnt seen one of those before but trying to be polite as it was bragged about killed my buzz.

Funny, I rarely get a lot of pressing questions, but when I get that one, I just tell them that I have it because of them and people like them.

If they call your Rem 700/AICS and L-96 they're a video game player. (Call of Duty). When my son rediscovered mine he burned through $100's of dollars of .260 ammo. I finally had to get a .223 varmint barreled action for it. It's one of the best ways to get him to go shooting with me.

If they're a gun nut they'd call it an AI.

We're actually going to visit North Carolina next year to see what it's like. We've just about had enough of CA and it's various problems for people like us.
