Gunsmithing R700 Action Blueprinting

I'm considering blueprinting a stock R700 action. I've done a lot of research and watched a lot of videos and I've got the Viper's action jig from PTG, but it seems everyone is using the Manson bolt-raceway reamer and tapered bushings as a means to indicate the action in the jig. Isn't there any specialized tool for aligning a receiver? Seems like overkill to use a raceway reamer in a capacity for which it wasn't really designed.

PTG and Manson both make precision ground bars and bushings for indicating in an action. They cost less then the bolt raceway reamer but you lose the option of reaming a raceway for an oversized bolt if you should ever want to do that in the future. I bought the reamer so I'd have that option, but that's just me.

+1 on what Twisted said, I have both also. It's a little bit of an investment but works well.

Their is no such animal as overkill.

Now that we have that out of the way. If you plan on reaming all of your actions for new boltsnor you ate sleeving the old ones then buying a reaming is a must. Now being that the reamer is a nice tight fit so it works fine as an indicating rod to dialing in the action. Now if you don't plan on running oversized bolts then you have to buy the bushings and indicating rod. I have seen Remington action bolt race ways range from .701"-.709" in diameter. Several years back I had some reamers ground at .702 , .703 , .704 and .705 and did some checking on every action I trued and found that all the actions I reamed NONE had a round bolt race way this is why I started reaming all the actions I did and running new bolts.

If the action is true, the bolt face and lugs are true, and the barrel is chambered and hung properly do you really think that a perfectly round raceway will make the difference between an X and a 9 ?
Once the bolt is locked, if all of the above is correct, the roundness of the raceway should be a non issue. The raceway is out of the picture once the lugs are locked.

I am just wondering if this is one of those things that is on the "nice to have" list, but not necessarily on the "must have" list when it comes to action truing ??

Just thinking out loud here and certainly not trying to contradict one smiths way of doing things over another....

You have to remember, the tool was made for providing a trued bore for a trued bolt body........think bench rifle or bushed bolt.
