R700 Receiver versus?

OP, the two bottom rifles are nearly identical except for the action, bottom metal and color. One is a GAP Crusader built on the GAP Templar Gen2 (Defiance) action and the other on a trued Remington action.

They both have 22" Bartlein barrels and they shoot identically

Just thinking if you were working with a clean slate why you wouldn't. </div></div>

It does not make it any more accurate to do so, But would add alot of cost, Not really the best bang for the buck.

Winchester Mod 70 rifles have had a machined in lug for over 50 years and still by a wide margin the 700 Remington is still touted as the best action to build off of.

The Idea behind the action was to offer somthing that would fit inside the bill of a fully tricked out Remington 700

Remington action $350
Trued by Smith $120
Tac Bolt Handle $95
Side Bolt Release $125
Open to 8-40 $40
Pinned Lug $35

Total $765

The Templar is currently exactly this same price when added to a build

The Gen 2 will be $175 More but we are adding the better extraction and the One Piece bolt to the mix.

Based on cost the Templar makes sense, When the Zombies take over and I head for the hills, I'll be carrying and AIAW anyway.

Bottom line is Get what makes you happy, its a considerable investment.

The Surgeon and the TRG didn't do it for me personally, so they were "Catch and Release" gun trades

Hope this helps

Re: R700 Receiver versus?

A little late to the conversation but I wanted to add my .02 cents to the original question as well.

I have a Tac Ops but am not a cool-aid drinker. I shoot both in working/field conditions and in local competitions. I like the R700 action trued by a good gunsmith. I have shot and continue to shoot sub 1/4 MOA out to 200 with a trued R700. On top of this, I have dragged this rifle in a low crawl through dirt, rain and weeds and unnamed gunk to get into good firing positions and it continues to shoot phenomenally well.

One the other hand, I have shot a friends "custom-tactical" action at the range in pristine conditions and found that the bolt binds on rapid follow up shots because the bolt to receiver tolerances are so tight.

There are some nice custom actions out there but in the end they all have to be made right and a do the same job. Don't get too wrapped up in it all.

Re: R700 Receiver versus?

my first custom gun was on a stiller. i still love playing with this gun. shoots 1/2"

second custom was on a bushmaster custom shop 700. shoots 3/8"

third on a trued 700 action. shoots 3/8"

and i have a factory 700 with nothing more than a jewel and h-s stock on it and it shoots 1/2"

is it worth going with a custom action? do you want to be able to have the status of "oh yea... i've got a custom action on my gun"

to me, nah.

Re: R700 Receiver versus?

Can you please explain why your gunsmith would charge $1000 more to build a rifle with a custom action vs. a trued Rem action.
I can see a small price premium to go with the custom action, but $1000 difference is hard to explain.
Bottom line, the custom will hold it's resale value better than the Rem action, so if I am building a custom rifle, it will be with a custom action.
