So am back home for Christmas and the LGS has a 16.5" SPS Tactical with a grey/green hogue over mold stock for $629? Anyone ever heard/seen this? I have a 20" SPS with a hogue but I've never seen a 16.5" one? Guess my google-foo is lacking because I can't find it anywhere? Anyone know anything about these?

Can you PM me the stores info that has this? I've been looking for one of these for awhile without much luck. Thanks

Re: R700 SPS AAC-SD 16.5"???

Well I saw it the day before Christmas and went down today and wouldn't you know it that it's gone. I was wrong regardless, he said it was $729, but damn that thing was neat, and like you all have said, it's the only one he said he's ever seen.

Re: R700 SPS AAC-SD 16.5"???

A 20" barrel seems ideal to me for a compact bolt gun.
If going for very long range then a 26" or so. 16" just seems or feels too short for a bolt gun.

Re: R700 SPS AAC-SD 16.5"???

"Seems" being the key word. I thought the same thing until I held it and realized this thing is pretty awesome. Kicking myself for not buying it, but I didn't know what it was nor how hard/impossible it was to find. 1/10" twist us pretty nice as well. M4 with a 16" barrel is accurate enough for the USMC to shoot their course of fire with out to 500 yards with a 5.56, I think 16.5" would be just fine for 100% of the "me" population.

Re: R700 SPS AAC-SD 16.5"???

the 16.5 inch version was mad for one distributor called sports south and they are dame near impossible to find. it would be 100 times easier to find a 20 inch version and have it cut. i looked for weeks calling all kinds of gun stores trying to find one. then i gave up and found a really good deal on a 20 inch

Re: R700 SPS AAC-SD 16.5"???

So if you were going to have an SPS cut down and threaded how short would you go?
I am wanting to add a Levang Linear compensator (made for AR-15) to my SPS tactical. I am going to have to have it threaded and since the compensator is 2" long I at least want 2" cut off to maintain the original length. Seeing this makes me think perhaps I should cut it to 16.5".

Re: R700 SPS AAC-SD 16.5"???

What does it cost to have a barrel cut, recrowned, and threaded? Not to mention shipping both ways and to buy a thread protector. I think I'll keep looking for the 16.5" again as that sounds like an additional $250 investment after all is said and done.

Re: R700 SPS AAC-SD 16.5"???

Well, you may find one, and you may not. There was a member on here that did finally find one, but he had his name in at about 15 different on-line retailers . He only heard back from one as far as I know. There is a thread on here somewhere about it .

Re: R700 SPS AAC-SD 16.5"???

Thanks for the info, i'll keep my eyes open and see how it plays out! I guess realistically, as long as the price is around $900 or less, it's still probably cheaper than getting a 20" Tactical redone. Plus you get the rarity factor, probably worth more 10 years from now.

Re: R700 SPS AAC-SD 16.5"???

You guys might want to try Gander Mountain if you have one close by. Up until about 3 months ago I was the firearms supervisor at a Gander and most of the special order guns we got in were from Sports South.

I'm the member who finally got my hands on one and the thread referenced above is mine.

I actually discovered this rifle because of another 'Hide member on here who gave up on his search. I can't find that original thread though. I kept at it for a while and as mentioned earlier, I found every online retailer who had sold or continued to sell this model. I essentially signed up for "updates" and "back in stock" e-mail notifications. It wasn't easy as it's a model that is exclusive to distribution by Sports South.

It's Remington / MODEL #85538. It more or less is a Remington 700 AAC-SD with a 16.5" threaded barrel and 1:10" twist chambered in .308 I don't believe it's available in .223, but I know there is another model just like this chambered in .300 AAC BLACKOUT...

Hope this helps!

I've seen the blackout and 308. I was just hoping they made it in 223... But know that I think about it, I only have a .30 can and it wouldn't fit that thread pattern anyway. Need to just chop down a 20'' I guess

there was one at my LGS "Collector Rifle and Ammo" in Hopewell Junction, NY. im pretty sure it was the .308, i saw it a couple months back and i was caught off gaurd when I saw it since i have a 20" model, and the shorter barrel felt a good bit lighter. I think 16" is a bit short for .308, and 18" may be a bit of a better compromise so I may have my barrel cut down in the future myself.

The shop I go to in Cleveland always has these in stock. (as well as any other rare thing you might want) They have no idea the stuff is rare and they sell rifles for less than guys sell them for on here used. I should just get an FFL and start up a business.

I like unique guns and I'm looking to get a rifle for hunting, shooting around the house and showing off. This seems like the perfect rifle for the job. What do you guys think? Also my walmart has it for $677 and I get a 10% discount, do you think I'll find a better deal anywhere?
