I had my 1 year old Savage 10fp (in 308) out the other day and was working on shot groups and trigger control with a longer than usual stock. I was trying to get a decent length of pull on the rifle before I ordered a custom stock.

anyway the rifle is still pretty new to me and I was just getting it dialed in at 100 yard and was just a little bit low using 168gn Hornady match ammo. I went to dial the scope up and I ran out if elevation. ( Millet 4x16 mil dot mil dot).

After looking at some notes I realized I was running right on the edge of the come ups since the scope was mounted. This does not seem normal.

I was going to get a 20 mao rail later but that would still only leave me with 19 moa of come ups to work with.

How what do I need to check to figure out what off and how do I check it?

I have a Brownells ( i think) one piece rail right now. The rail itself measures pretty straight Same height at both ends

Re: Ran out of elevation at 100

If you are out of elevation at 100 yards then you either have a problem with your scope or it's not properly mounted. At 100 yards you should be somewhere around the middle of the scope range. Check the scope against the specs and make sure you have somewhere close to the full travel advertised by the vendor. If that all checks out then look at the scope base and rings to make sure the rings are even and the base is properly mounted. I don't know anything about Savages but if this were a Remmy, I would guess that you have an MOA base that's mounted backwards.

Re: Ran out of elevation at 100

Is it possible you got the wrong base?
(round vs flat rear bridge)

I've seen a similar situation when the wrong rings were used on a ruger...(scope was basically pointing down)

Re: Ran out of elevation at 100

Count your total MOA of adjustment also. You should have something in the 90moa from full up to full down. Even with a flat base your 100 yard zero should be somewhere around the center of that. My guess is you either are not getting all your MOA out of the scope or your rail is the wrong one or not mounted correctly.

Re: Ran out of elevation at 100

I thought about the back wards thing so I check the rail and it measures the same at both ends. Height wise.

I'm assuming the action is flat an in line with the barrel.

If I turn the rail around the rear part overhangs the loading port a little so it looks like it only supposed to go on one way.

The scope has about 60moa of travel in it. 5.5 mils per rotation x 3.6 x 3

Re: Ran out of elevation at 100

My buddy had the same problem, mounts rings and Konus scope were all up to spec. We ended up shimming the bottom of the rear ring. Problem solved. Not the professional way maybe but it's been fine for over a year now.

Which side of the gun is your windage knob on?

Re: Ran out of elevation at 100

Just checking, seen them mounted 90* out more than once.

Something wrong w/ the scope or the base. Buy a 20 MOA base and see if it all comes back to you. If you only get 20 MOA back then you have a scope w/ the erector out of whack and it will fail on you sooner than later.

Doc

Would be even funnier if I told you my knobs on the bottom not on the side

I was afraid of that. I'll try the 20 moa rail and may swap some scopes around. I hate doing that.

Re: Ran out of elevation at 100

that millett should be 90+ moa and 25 mils if its mil/mil. mine does. the moa i had met 90 and the mil had 25.3ish. if not, bushnell will send you a brand new one. ask me how i know.

Re: Ran out of elevation at 100

I finally got my Millet scope back from Bushnell and they said they had to recenter the reticle.

I was getting ready to remount it and noticed the windage knob was all wonky. It was out of round, alot.

I sent it back again and this time I asked them to keep it and I traded up for a 4200 3-12 ffp.

This has got to work better than the Millet

Re: Ran out of elevation at 100

First rifle I picked up was a Savage 110 in 7mm. It was a used gun the dealer was going to make sure it was atleast bore sighted for me and found he couldn't. Shimmed the rear base and it was fine. I ended up redoing all the mounting and put a new scope on. Went the Burris signature rings with the posi-line inserts. That way I was able to keep the base locked down tight to the receiver. Sold the gun to a buddy and it is still set up the way I had it...Elk killing rifle still.
