Rifle Scopes Ran out of windage trying to zero my Viper PST..

Brand new SPS tactical and Viper PST. Went to zero it in at 100yrds at my range. It was shooting high and right. After a few shots, my windage was maxed out, and i still wasnt hitting paper! I removed everything and remounted it with no luck. I'm guessing the problem lies within the base, rings or receiver..but i have no idea at this point.

EWG HD 20MOA base
Burris XTR low rings
Viper PST 6-24x50

Not sure where to start to be honest. I'll be picking up a digital caliper tomorrow to check if the holes were drilled correctly on the base. Other than that, i will swap in a cheap Center Point scope and rings from my 10/22. Any advice on troubleshooting this would be awesome. TIA

No, it's mounted correctly. I cant see it being a knockoff, as i just bought it from CS Tactical.

Did you try bore sighting it first? If not try zeroing in at shorter distance like 25 to 30 yards to get on paper, at 100 yards if you don't see where it is going you cant adjust it. If you dont have a bore sighting setup put your gun into a shooting vice or cleaning stand and secure it so it doesn't move you can take the bolt out of the rifle and use a flashlight to shine through the barrel in a dim lit room onto a wall works well then dial the scope so the reticle is on the spot where the light shines. It is not perfect nor ideal but it will save ammo and if done properly should get you close. If it will not center the reticle on the lit spot then you may have a mounting issue. I do not have one of these scopes but I read they have a shim setup for zero stop system so you may want to make sure there aren't shims preventing it from adjusting far enough. Just out of curiosity how many mil/moa did you dial to run out? By the way the optics section may prove to be more helpful. Good luck

Gilly, thanks for the info, i'll give the flashlight through the bore a shot. After i left the range i actually told my buddy I should have shot it at 25 or 50yrds to get it on the paper, so i can have a better idea of what is going on. Just got too frustrated and threw in the towel, ended up shooting the AR the rest of the time.

If i am remembering correctly i had it adjusted ~10mils to the left.

And there are no zero stop shims installed.

If, after you get a good bore sight done, you are still that far off, you can probably get by with either the Burris Signature Zee rings or a set of US Optics windage adjustable rings.

I'm thinking the receiver holes are out of alignment. I had that problem with the last 700 I bought.

It's a no brainer if you're sure that's the problem.

Are you getting the correct total amount of adjustment that's supposed to be available? If you're not even on paper, on a windless day with the windage centered, it's either a defective scope or the receiver holes as you said, since switching the rings didn't make a difference.

Every shooter that uses optics should have a Leupold Boresighter. Damn thing's amazing... I bought an aftermarket scope mount for a Mosin, mounted it and put the boresighter on the barrel and it showed the scope was off by a mile. I removed the mount and examined it closely and could see the milling was way off center, confirming what the boresighter indicated.

I had a similar problem with my first SPS Tactical, although mine wasn't as bad as yours because I was able to get it zeroed. I initially thought that my mount holes were off center, but I asked my smith to check it out when I had the rifle rebarreled. It turned out that my barrel was threaded slightly crooked and installed that way.

Of course, I've had a problem or two with my PST as well. I'd shoot at a closer distance and at least verify that adjustments on the scope are doing something.

did you lap the rings.or just put the scpoe in the rings and ran with it.might need lapping.or it coud be that fact that the rings are just a little off from one another.had that to happen one time to me.was told to swotch out rings from front to back.just happened to fix it.but if all of the above isn't the case then a set of windage rings will fix it.

I tried everything that's been suggested here first, and then I sent it to Chad Dixon in SD. He confirmed my suspicions and d&t'ed the holes in proper alignment in 8-40.

I could have sent it back to Remington for a couple of months and have them send it back with a note that it was "within specs", but Chad fixed the problem and I had the gun back in a few days.

have you checked the scope to see how much travel is actually there? whats the advertised travel for that scope -vs- what yours has is the next thing id find out. then see what may or may not be in the rest of the mix

And there is the possibility that the internals to the scope itself may be part of the problem. Even Vortex has been known to have a problem every once in a while.

Since you have already made the changes to the reciever, if it has the same problems, I would say it's the scope. I just can't see even the receiver holes being off center could cause that much of a shift in windage... just sayin.

The scope has 20mils of windage adjustment. I was maxed out, 10 mils to the left and still not hitting the target at 100yrds. I'll take it out to shoot 25 and 50yrds this weekend.

I'm not ruling out the scope, but from what i hear, it seems to most commonly be a receiver or barrel issue with these 700s. I'm pretty annoyed at the matter, but shit happens. If it ends up being the gun, i hope Remington makes it right.

Since the receiver was drilled and tapped for the 8-40s by your smith, I don't know what Remington will do to "make it right".

When you checked the amount of windage adjustment did you watch the reticle or just spin and count?

I think you're getting 2 different posters mixed up. The OP of the thread is SPStactical308. He has NOT had anybody do anything to the receiver yet, or have the holes redrilled and tapped. There is someone else commenting on their Remington 700 that goes by Fw707. That is the poster that said he had a gunsmith figure out that the holes were out of alignment, and had them drilled and tapped by a gunsmith. I think you may be mixing up 2 different posters.

I'm sorry to hear that this is going on, especially since you just got advice and got the new scope. I agree with the others, with that much windage dialed on, you should be able to easily get on paper. I would also agree to put it in a rest or something where it's stationary and dial the windage and see if it moves. If the reticle is in fact tracking, then the problem probably isn't with the scope. That sucks, let us know what you ifnd out.

Z71rat- The entire gun is stock, nothing has been modified.

Knight- I did not watch the reticle. Just spun and counted. I had my buddy watching where the shots hit the backstop through his scope. It was tough to call with the wind and soft dirt, but i want to say adjusting the windage did NOT change where it was hitting by much, if any. Again, it was very hard to see.

As Knight said you could look through this and begin to spin the windage to see where it is tracking. That many mil out would be a huge issue.
