Gunsmithing range rod VS Grizzly rod

This is something i am currently debating, and i would like to see what other opinions on this subject are.
I have dialed in barrels using both rods and it seems to me that the range rods are easier to dial in true, compared to the grizzly or Gordy rod. Maybe the Gordy rod is more sensitive than the range rod, thus being the better tool? lee

the grizzly rods will read the same tir if you pull them out of the bore and reinsert them. the tapered range rods, not so much.

Or, you can indicate right off the bore....

I actually use both. First I'll use the range rod to get me close and then go in with the grizzly rod and fine tune it.

Before when I would use the rods, after dialing in with them I would check again using a long stylus indicator and it would always be off. So now if at all possible I indicate directly off the bore. I just feel more confident doing it this way. But if it works for you and the barrel shoots do what works best for you.

I do need a long stylus indicator for sure. I think i do like the idea of using both rods. The range rod to get close and the grizz rod to final the indication with. The main reason i bought the range rods were to do the crowns.
I did a little experiement with crowns a while back. I took an old ppc barrel that i knew would shoot sub 1/4" at 100 yards and stuck it in the 3 jaw to re cut the crown. my cheap 3 jaw runs out about .0015 to .002. I didnt indicate the bore i just cut the face straight and took it around back to shoot it. I have my own shooting room and range so i can really get down and dirty with the testing. The barrel shot just as good with the quick facing crown job as it did with an indicated crown job. Now with that said, i will still indicate the bore before i cut the crown as i like to pretend i know what i am doing. I think the range rods will be perfect for crown work. They will also work well to indicate a set back. Lee

I think the key to the range rods is to use a light press fit. just enough pressure to keep them from moving. If you jam them they will never read the same. I can pull them and put them back in and get repeatable readings.

all that, I still use the stylus in the bore to double check.

The rifling doesn't affect the reading on the indicator?

Turn the spindle slowly by hand. Indicate off of the tops of the lands or the bottoms of the grooves.

I am keeping an open eye out on ebay, for a nice used Intrepid indicator. There not cheap, but what is!! Lee

I use a mitutoyo but have my eye out for a interapid.

But as you do it more you will get better and better and making it work.
