The Great Beyond
Been reading threads on rangefinders and i'm sorta stuck between a good "single"/monocular vs ranging binos. Having been to a class recently, the idea of accurate distance kinda hit a nerve as I couldn't range for squat through my reticle.

Intent: Mostly hunting at 1000 and in (and realistically 600 and in)
Secondary: Ranges for matches/targets (again 1000 and in)

I realize binos would double the cost, but i'm curious if I really need that for my intended purpose.

What's better for my intended use of hunting and matches under 1000 binos or a "handheld"

Is there a question?
If you’re looking for brand and models, there’s a slew of rangefinders that will go reliably to 1000y for $500 +/-.

If you’re hunting, binos save needing both a rangefinder and binos. However, if you dabble with archery, stalking an animal at ranges that close with binos is…impractical to say the least.

Further more, you can consolidate a lot by getting something like the vortex fury AB. This gives you binos, rangefinder and a speedy solution.

I guess its "What advantages do Binos give you" while hunting (literally i don't know--I hunted in the 80s as a teen with a 30/30 and that's it--parked my ass in snow, waited for deer, shot deer). TBH you bring up a good point that already you've got rifle/kestrel/etc... (I've never hunted with binos--still learning) When I was at class--I saw instructors using a handheld--I dunno if that is enough or not. I'm good on what to buy (brands), but its which way to go I'm having trouble with.

The advantage a Bino with RF gives you while hunting is one less piece of gear to carry and one step removed from seeing the quarry to making the shot if it’s at a distance far enough to need ranging. That’s assuming you would always carry binoculars anyway which most hunters do. I would personally never hunt without binoculars.
I have a couple pair of ranging binoculars currently and have owned several brands and models over past few years. I use them for both competitions and hunting and with all the models available there should be something out there to fit your needs.
