It is not a "lower" twist rate, it is a faster twist rate. A 1:9 rate is good for up to about 69 grain bullets, a 1:8 or 1:7 will stabilize the 75/77 and heavier bullets.

As per your other post.I didnt believe 77 would work.I discovered it by accident when a buddy gave me some loaded rounds to git rid of.The first group of 5 rds was a bug hole.I had another friend shooting with me to shoot a group same result. The only difference was these were loaded for an ar15 so i refined them. The 77CC and the 77smk are interchangable in my rifle.

I've used the 55gr PMC rounds, the ones in the black box with goldish writting that says "Bronze", and I got a .5 moa 3 shot group that turned into .8 moa 5 shot group. It really surprised my, but that stuff works really well in my SPS.

Re: Rate of twist on sps tactical 223?

i run the 77 SMKs exclusively in my wifes, never had a problem with them, but i cannot run the 75 amaxs, the twist really isn't to concerned with bullet weight as it is with ogive length.

Re: Rate of twist on sps tactical 223?

I used to have a 26" Model 70 Stealth with a 1/9 twist. It stabilized both my 75 gr Hornady HPBT and 75 gr Hornady Amax handloads with ease.

The key is the longer barrel. Since rotational velocity is what stabilizes a bullet, and rotational velocity is directly proportional to linear velocity given a fixed rifling rate, and a longer barrel usually allows higher MV, longer barrels will stabilize bullets that may not fly well in shorter barrels of the same twist.

Have that exact same rifle. Multiple Black Hills (new and reloaded) and Hornady loads have all proved to be 1 MOA ammo's. Sometimes a little less, sometimes more. The rifle really didn't shine until I started reloading. That being said, my most accurate loads are with Sierra 53 or 69 match kings. Never tried Gold Medal, but I imagine it would shoot really well also.

Good luck and enjoy the rifle!
