Ray-Vin Stand

Re: Ray-Vin Stand

I heard he retired and not sure if anyone is taking over. I was looking for one of his tactical stands and could not find one last week either. I have the NRA Spotting scope stand and love it. Not field gear on the large version but nice static range work. Frank for stic NRA shooting where you have very limited space on side for stand the Ray Vin is fantastic. In field work yours is a hundred times better

Mike

At SAC Valley even on the range they had the Creedmoor Ray Vin and in the wind there it was literally impossible to use. It shook so bad you couldn't see out of it as the vibration transferred through the stand to the scope.

There are smaller models of tripods that will not transfer the vibration in windy situations as well on concrete.

I have the Ewing Tactical and found it very limiting. A smaller Manfrotto is still a better choice in my opinion.

Re: Ray-Vin Stand

I went through 2 cheap option stands, and was frustrated with both before I decided that quality is worth the price and bought a Manfrotto 190. It goes almost perfectly flat, the upright can be switched to be parallel with the ground and it gives you great support on uneven surfaces. The only drawback is that you need a fair amount of space for the legs to be spread out flat and the spotting scope close enough to your eye to negate the need to completely break cheekweld etc.

Also consider the sheer weight of a lot of spotting scopes. I have a Zeiss 65mm and on the cheaper stand, in even a slight wind, that scope acted like a sail - a heavy one at that. Some quick reflexes saved that spotter from the concrete at Angeles.

Good luck.

Re: Ray-Vin Stand

Frank, I was talking about getting spotting scope close to shooter so he can read mirage when shooting comp, while in prone position. The Tripods become problematic because of size while the Ray Vin allows you to lay spotter away from stand without getting in another shooters lane.

My wanting a Tactical Ray Vin os for traveling NRA Comps not tactical, because as you pointed out it sucks in field. I use mine for prone only so no sway problems

No doubt a Tripod is far more stable up high or on uneven ground

Event "Cheap" not the Ray Vin brother, well made piece of NRA gear

Re: Ray-Vin Stand

I hope I didn't make a mistake....I went on and ordered the Creedmoor "Polecat" stand with 3/4 inch rod and head. Don't you think that should be enough stand for a 66 Kowa w/20x60Z eyepiece?
