Razor Gen2 Spotter 27-60

Ill be keeping an eye on this post as well. Rented one from the local range on Saturday... I don't think it was a fair "test"... the mirage was so bad on Saturday that I couldn't distinguish target hits at 600 yards. I have been wanting one of these myself, but don't have anything to compare it to.

For optical quality, quality control in production you may wish to look at a Kowa, a Meopta or the Athlon Crouns

So doug, as a dealer, you have seen QC issues with the vortex gen 2 razor as compared to Athlon? Meopta/ Kowa seem in a different league here right?

Also could you point us to a general resource to educate ourselves in terms of a 'buyers guide' to buying a spotting scope/ high mag binos for long range precision type spotting? I just feel like I'm not even to a point to have intelligent questions to ask you, and searches haven't yielded much thus far.

One of the great places is actually birdforum.net as the birders are highly particular of their optics and very critical.

It's always our pleasure to discuss different optics with you, so feel free to give a call and pick our brains if you have a few moments

As of September 2017 we no longer handle Vortex products.

I can say that Athlon QC is excellent. They not only do QC here in the US, but they also have their own people over at the factory doing QC after mfg but before shipping here to the US

Well hell, I wish we could just quit beating around the bush here.

Open to the community at large, not just doug:
What sort of issues have there been with the QC/ quality of vortex spotting scopes- namely the Razor/ Viper product lines to keep the thread on pace.

I have the 27-60 Razor G2 and while I haven’t used it a ton nor am I the foremost expert on spotters, I’m very happy with it. Very bright, clear, well built and the Vortex warranty is top notch. I haven’t had it out to the range yet, but it worked great for mule deer hunting this past season.

I packed this same model around in a few classes in some less than desirable conditions over the last few years.
I was careful with it, but frankly it got thrown in and out of the truck, and my pack which got lugged up and down hill and dale.

That particular one lived to tell about it.

I have both the old and new style Vortex Razors. My wife bought me the new style Razor and I'm very happy with it. To my eyes optical quality on both is very good. I can see the bullet holes at 300 yards with both. The only minor set back to me is the new style doesn't have fine focus adjustment like the old style. But the focus on the new style is large and goes around the entire body. I did look through a Leupold but it was only a max power of 40x

I'm selling my old style in the Post Exchange Optics section.

I have this spotter. I mostly shoot alone. So, I didn't want to tie up a lot of $ in a spotter, therefore I wanted a high value spotter. This lead me to the G2 Razor. I have been able to spot 300 win mag trace and bullet splash on white painted IPSC @ 1050yds. However I was not able to confidently see 375 Cheytac hits shooting solids---no splash only perfect small copper circles on the target however could easily see the trace and target moving. At 1450 yds I could still call hits with target movement and trace but more difficult with the marks on steel. This was on an overcast day that had occasional snowfall that we had to stop shooting for due to visibility. On a full sunny day, I might have been able to see my buddy's monolithics hit marks... But not sure.

On a different day I was shooting with another friend that had his older Swarovski. I don't remember what model it is... I'd have to ask him again. But anyways we both we're surprised and both agreed that the G2 Vortex appeared to have better glass than his Swarovski. Otherwise both the G2 and Swarovski were head and shoulders above the G1 Vortex that another friend had--- glass wise in our opinions.
