Re-Stocked Remington 700 AAC-SD Results

My wife had been tagging along with me at the range for quite a while and decided she wanted her own rifle. She settled on the Remington 700 AAC-SD because she liked the feel of the Hogue over-mold stock. Unfortunately, the very stock that was the selling point for her is also the rifles greatest flaw. When using a bipod the stock firmly press against the barrel causing huge accuracy problems. I was getting 4" groups at 100m using 175 gr Federal Gold Medal Match. I hit the web for a low cost alternative to the Hogue and found Lonewolfe's video in which he recommends the Bell and Carlson m40 stock. I gave the B&C m40 a go due to the low cost, aluminum bedding and most importantly my wife liked the color . My groups went from 4.0" to 0.5" using the same 175 gr Federal Gold Medal Match! I also added the Triad Stock Pack, and replaced the Xmark trigger with a Timney 510. I added the stock pack just to give her a means of adjusting her cheek weld. I put a quick video together that shows the results from my 100m zero and shooting steel at 500, 600, and 900 meters.

Very nice glad to see the improvements! My buddies for some reason shoots half inch with the factory hogue. Pretty crazy

Mine too. I now have a take off 5R stock that has not been put on yet. I totally see the not liking the houge but mine never touched on bags or bipod.
I bought the gun a few years back when I was out of town and found a place to shoot and all my friends had rifles except for me. Got the SPS tac and a lupy scope and was shooting with the other guys.
Gun really impressed me with its accuracy for a rifle scope that I gave $800 for.
I can't wait to check it out in the new stock.

I agree with you about the stock. I have the 700 SPS Tactical and found that I was having the same issue. After selling a few other "toys", I recently purchased a McMillan A4 in olive drab. The factory X-mark Pro trigger on my gun was junk.. It is supposed to be 3.5 lbs out of box with 2 lb range of adjustment. Mine would not go lower than 6lbs. I put a timmey trigger in the gun and set it at 1.5lb. What a difference. A co-worker bought his SPS Tactical .308 from the same store and his trigger works fine.

Yah I guess its just "luck of the draw" in regards to the stock. I went to the local gun store a couple weeks ago and he had two AAC-SD's, one sitting on the counter with a scope and bipod, the other up on the rack. The stock on the rifle sitting on the counter had the same problem as mine. I checked out the other rifle on the rack and their was no contact between the barrel and stock. I feel bad for whoever buys the rifle sitting on the counter.

I had the same problem trying to adjust the X-mark, mine was stuck just shy of 6lbs also. Not that it matters now, but I heard that if you adjust the X-mark it voids your warranty with Remington, doesn' that defeat the whole purpose of having one in the first place?

That's odd you had problems with the hogue. Mine shot .5 moa with Hornady 168 AMAX. However I did switch to a B&C medalist so I am excited to see how that does.

I purchased a new Remington 700 AAC-SD rifle and bought a used B&C 2094 stock. When i dropped the receiver in and barely snugged the screws in i notice that my barrel is touching the stock. I thought this stock was supposwd to be free floating?

If the ammo they were putting out in the year or so before they went under was any indication, I have no doubt QC was lacking big time over the past few years at Remington. Likely some great firearms came out of there at the same time, but probably a lot of crap too.

You might get something assembled by a craftsman who knew what they were doing, using all the best parts available, or you might get something slapped together by a day drinker 1/2 hour before end of shift on a Friday afternoon using parts from the reject bin … or just straight up tolerance stacking from stuff barely in spec.
