I know this is like discussing your religion, but i want some input on what 308 to buy and why. I have a trg42 and now im looking for a good 308 bolt gun. I would like to stay under 3k. I thought seriously about the trg22 nd may go that route then the fn a5 caught my eye. i have no experience with that rifle so any info on it would be appreciated. im open to new or used. A GA precision is really appealing. I will primarily be target shooting as well as maybe long rang deer hunting. I have access to shoot 400yd anytime and often i get to go to 1000. I plan to most likley run plain old 175s in it. I hand load everything. I already have a dpms lr308 that shoots excellent with 168s but it weighs a metric ton. I would like to stay in the 10-12 lb range or lighter. preferably 20"-22" barrel. So lets hear your opinions

This would be simple for me: Get you a Stiller Predator in the group buy going on right now. A good quality barrel in sendero contour and your rifle will stay in that weight range.

I have this set up and about $2500

The group buy is simple. Just go to the group by section here:

There are several outstanding gunsmiths on here to include the guys at stiller's. There may be one in your area but I dont know. The build could take awhile. The action my be ready for shipping after April 1. Barrels are instock with bugholes on here. Stocks can be several weeks out depending on what you want. Manners has some in stock ready to ship and McMillen has some for sale at third generation shooting supply. Then get you the trigger of your choice. Stillers stocks them and you can get them in the group buy.

You know, for the money it's hard to beat an LTR to do both target shooting and hunting... That's what I'd be looking at. I love my gap but your not going to catch me carrying that thing out to a deer stand unless I'm driving it on a 4 wheeker or if I'm trying to loose weight and need a workout!

Re: Ready for a new 308 looking for advice

I'm not trying to dissuade you from .308 (I own 4), but have you considered a different caliber/cartridge? There are better all around choices than .308. 7mm-08, .260, 6.5 Creedmoor, etc... the list is considerably longer.

Stiller Tac30 GB-$860
Rock Creek H-Forged Barrel GB-$245 (Med. Palma or Tubb contour)
R&D Bottom Metal-$260

Manners Ready to Ship Stock-$550-$600
Smithing Fees-$800

Total: $2,855 Hammer!

SO i pulled the trigger on it. Bought this gun off gunbroker. Looked like a good deal. Has anyone here used the IOR Valdada 10x 56mm with the mp8 reticle. let me know if i have made a mistake, but this gun looked like a winner to me you never know till you get behind it, only thing im not wild about is the brake but i can change it later if i don't like it honestly i prefer no brake

Re: Ready for a new 308 looking for advice

It's looks good but did you ask how many rounds down pipe? Who built it? Can they provide receipts? 2 or 3 day money back if your not satisfied with it?

That thing is definitely not gonna be 10-12lbs, 16 if your lucky, probably more though.

You took a big risk, hopefully it pays off. Let us know how she shoots.

you right 16 on the money. He said it was a local smith not very well known. I may have gotten took i don't know yet i just rolled the dice. He sent me list of the prices he paid. I think for what ive got invested in it i did alright we will see 10 rounds down the pipe
