Original USMC M40 at the range!

Gentlemen: Some days you meet the unexpected.
I went to the range and bumped into an old friend.
He saw one of our M40A1’s we were shooting and commented, “I have one
of the originals”. Sure!

He told us he would be back the next day and show it to us.

Well, here it is: A USMC “Trophy” M40. Pristine as the day his friend won it.
Papers, case and all. So, I had brought my camera and took as many pictures as I could.
Sorry, many duplicates at varying f-stops.

Well, at least I got to hold it in my bare hands and take the pictures. It’s never been fired since leaving the Remington factory

Its a second run gun Jason, Made after the war. Second Run (7 Digit Serial) were never fielded to the USMC, Navy guys got a few and the Airforce security forces got some.


USMC Issue guns started with 221xxx and 234xxx all of them! and they all had flat safteys

This is a very awesome rifle. I do think my itchy finger would have to pull the trigger and see how it groups. What a great piece of history for sure!

My M40,
Yes, as Terry stated in the previous post with pics of the M40, he was shooting his replica M40A1 at the range (literally one hole groups at 300 yds which got my attention) so I had to see the rifle doing this. I saw it and recognized it as a very nice replica M40A1 and stated nonchalantly "I have a real M40." Well, the music stopped and Terry and his father incredulously stated " You have a what?!!" Shortly there after I showed Terry, and his father took the pictures you see on this site. In the back ground over the M40 case you see the scope for my Win 70 .300 Win Mag I was load testing at 600 yds.

Yes, I'm lucky enough to own this rifle. Some history on it: It was awarded to a US Marine High Power Rifle Team member, J.W. Johnson, in 1981 for winning the National Indiv. Trophy Match (leg Match) at Camp Perry in 1981 with a score of 495 out of 500. (This was when the M14 was King at the matches.) Excellent shooting for sure, but what would you expect from the USMC! BTW JW is double distinquished, Pistol & Rifle lending more credence to his excellent shooting abilities. (JW & I became life long friends since first meeting each other pulling pit duty together at Camp Perry.) This was a Gov't purchased M40 from Remington, the later batch, for the USMC. This is why a Marine was awarded this rifle. Now, there will nay sayers trying to diminish this rifle by saying it could be an AF security gun or something else. It's not, it is what it is, a Remington contract gun to the Marine Corps. It is in Peter Senich's book One Round War. That didn't get into his book because is was something it wasn't. Last year I presented it to Jim Land at NRA HQ to get his blessing on the rifle. I had four witnesses in the room besides myself. He stated he doesn't think there are more than 5 or 6 of these rifles that were awarded and yes they are USMC M40s. Remember back then it was just another rifle and some saw it as good gun to go hunting with, so they're not so pristine now. My M40 has been taken out once a year and wiped down and oiled, other than the occasional showing. I have never shot it and to the best of my knowledge neither has JW. A couple of rounds through it at Remington and that's it. It is in the original issued hard case and has the DCM paperwork signed by JW showing the pedigree of the Rifle from Uncle Sam to him. Remember it is what it is no matter what someone else might say. Yes, it's up for sale at this moment and I have interested people looking at it. I'm in no rush to sell; I don't need the money but I will sell at the right price. There is no more out there and it's condition speaks for itself. Let's just see what the market tells me.
