When I got back from deployment, I really wanted to get into some three gun matches. I started using my AR more, a standard RRA entry tactical with the 2-stage trigger. After a few trips to the range, my rifle started firing shots in bursts. I've got an enormous amount of AR trigger time. I wasn't getting bumpfires, these were actual bursts of 3-5 rounds.

I decided the sear was probably worn out so I got a JP single stage installed (yellow springs) and I'll be damned if that didn't fix the problem. I was still getting multiple shots. Then I found out the smith used his grinder on the hammer and took off too much steel with was keeping the sear from engaging. I gave him the lower back so he could correct his error.

The dude put a new trigger in without telling me. I knew because the yellow springs were gone. He didn't charge me for it, but did charge me for labor. I figured that as long as the problem was fixed, I'd walk away happy. Not so.

I took my AR back to the range today to re-zero my optics and it shot about 15 rounds just fine. Then it went back to its burst-habit. The damn rifle is on its 3rd trigger group and it's still doing this bullshit.

I'm completely frustrated with the whole deal. I'm not going back to that smith, obviously. He's lost my business forever. I don't know of any reliable smiths in NC, but I'd be willing to drive a while if I knew I could get it fixed right. I was planning on having it re-barreled anyway, so maybe I'll send it to White Oak, have them put a new barrel on, and fix the trigger group while they're at it.

Either way, I'm going to kick back with a few cigars and some bourbon on the porch tonight. Man, I'm pissed.

Re: Really frustrated with my AR

why not just order a RR 2 stage and spend 2 minutes installing it and be done with it?

Shouldn't need a smith at all for it.

In fact, I've got a RR 2 stage and a WOA 18" barrell I'm probably gonna list pretty soon.

I agree w/ CKA. It's one of the easiest things to do to an AR.

Re: Really frustrated with my AR

I've been meaning to start working on my own rifle, but haven't got the tools or the space in my apartment. What tools would I need to replace the trigger group properly? And why the hell can't a "gunsmith" do it right?

At the start of his post he says he has an RRA with the 2 stage trigger, it probably already has the RRA one in it.

As for bursts I would take it apart and send it back to the manufacturer ASAP, you don't want to get dinged for possession of a machine gun (there was a guy recently who got dinged for that because his rifle was malfunctioning and firing bursts).

All you need is something to push out the trigger pins. I didn't need to remove the safety or anything. Search around online AR15.com should have a good pictorial on how to build up a lower.

Re: Really frustrated with my AR

I don't have an extra trigger as of yet. I'll see if I can't pick one up this week from one of the tactical shops in town. I'll give you a holler if I can't figure it out.

Re: Really frustrated with my AR

dude, pay for shipping and parts - I'll drop it in and test fire the shit out of it. On video if you want. No charge.

I'll just mix it in with one of my range days

Re: Really frustrated with my AR

A couple other things to consider with your AR trigger:
Get a set of anti-walk pins as this will help insure that the geometry of the trigger parts stays consistent. You may have a disconnector that has been shaved off on the hook too much or on the front end and you are not getting good engagement which will allow the hammer to continue to fall instead of resetting. Also look at replacing your disconnector spring as it may not be pushing your diconnector back up and into the hammer as it comes back. The click you hear when restetting the trigger after firing is the disconnector releasing to allow the trigger to be captured against the sear (front of trigger and hammer interface) Sounds like someone has jacked with the trigger parts that did not know what they were doing and have taken too much metal off somewhere. I run the JP Enterprise fire control group triggers in my guns and have had great results. I use the red hammer spring with the yellow trigger spring and have found it to be a consistent 4 lb trigger with almost no creep and a sharp reset. Just some more food for thought. Good luck with your trigger and let us know how it turns out.

Re: Really frustrated with my AR

Alright, so I woke up this morning and disassembled the trigger group, took a look for any weird tool marks, and re-assembled them. You were all right. Putting the trigger group in is a piece of cake.

I didn't see any spot where the smith may have ground down the parts. It looks pretty damn stock to me. I'll take it back to the range around noon and try to replicate yesterday's debaucle. If I can, then I guess I need to buy a new trigger group. Thanks for the help, and I'll post again once I get back from the range.

Re: Really frustrated with my AR

Just got back from the range. I ran three mags through it, slow fire and rapid fire. It functioned fine this time, leading me to believe that something was wrong with the original installation. I didn't have enough 5.56 on hand to do an extended test, but I'm satisfied.

Re: Really frustrated with my AR

You can take some very fine metal polish to the engagement surfaces and polish out the grittiness - just don't change the geometry or buff so hard that you eat through the hardening process. It will help. In fact, a standard MIL spec that has be polished becomes a pretty nice trigger via this.

Good luck
