Have always been tempted by the platform and now since it seems to be the only ammo I see anywhere, its that much more tempting. Keep seeing savages on Armslist and don't think I can hold out much longer

I have a CZ453 in 17 hmr and love it. The set trigger is awesome ! If you get to pick one up and hold it you would not even look at the savage. I like savage don't get me wrong but the CZ is a better rifle. When you hold the CZ you feel like your holding a center fire.
Do it. I have a LH T-bolt synthetic in .17HMR, its not as popular as the CZ or Savages but I prefer it over my savage .22's. Costs a little more coin up front but build quality are worlds apart.
Unfamiliar with the hm2, can you elaborate?
I mainly just want another cheap and fun to shoot small rifle that i can find ammo for. I can find ammo all day for a .17hmr but not for a .22
I have a Ruger 77/17 that is an absolute blast to shoot. That said, if I was buying a .17 right now, I'd seriously look at the new savage chambered in .17WSM or wait a bit to see what other rifles come out in that caliber.
you guys wll probaly laugh but at this point its either a.17 or a Mosin. Just want something relatively cheap and fun to shoot
It's a 17 based on the stinger case. It's quoted as the best squirrel caliber ever by most owners. It has about 80% of the power and range as the hmr, and can usually be found for less than 80% of the price. Depending on what you want to do, it's looking right now, for the future

As much as I don't want another rimfire, to me, the WSM has further increased the unusefulness (uselessness may offend some hummerers) of the HMR. It seems kinda like the .243 saying i have heard repeated many times. Too small for big stuff and too big for small stuff.
I have also been thinking Mosin, as it seems that all but the cheapest ammo is still available. I just don't know what I would do with one.
I've got one of the cheapy savages and love it, and now with my stockpile of .17HMR ammo it's likely the rifle I'll be shooting more than anything. The ranges around here are 100 yards for the most part (200 available 1 Sunday per month) so dragging the 308 or 300wsm out is just getting boring.
I looked at 22lr, hm2 and 17hmr when I picked the 17 and I don't think it was a bad choice. Rabbits just flop over when you hit them with the 17 and with good shot placement you don't waste any meat. Now that's true of any caliber, but I've actually taken an honest 125 yard head shot on a bunny in the field and I don't know if I could have done that lobbing a 22lr round at it. Haven't found a squirrel yet while out so I can't say what happens with those guys.
I've got one of the boyds stocks for mine but felt it ruined the feel of the rifle as a hunter, but was fine on the bench at the range, so I swapped back to my krylon'ed factory stock plastic thing.
I also believe the caliber is intrinsicly highly accurate. My wife is not a shooter of any skill (has gone to the range maybe 3 times in the last 8 years) and she did this with the 17 at 100 yards the first time out with the savage:
Not the best group around but that's with zero training beyond me showing her how to use the bipod and rear bag for a minute. I say that rifle/cartridge is accurate. She now refers to the 17 as "her rifle" for some reason, even though she's not shot it since.
I also like that range over a .22 when out in the hills...

Have two old trigger Savage 93 heavy barrels. Sold my 22 mag after nailing groundpigs with the 17 past 250y. Still cheaper then using the 22-250

Had one barrel treaded for my can. Now the fun really starts Need to find more ammo local THe 17hmr is a great round. It doesn't matter which gun you shoot it out of, it will always group smaller than a nickel at 100 yards all day long.
I've been shooting it for years for varmint control. I use to shoot feral cats with a 22, they would run off after getting shot. Switched to the 17hmr and have never lost one since.
Drops them like a big game rifle on an Elephant. Get a good one and never look back.

I bought a savage mkII in .22 and wish I would have bought a .17, I have a buddy that has a .17hmr with a trigger job and a free floated barrell and it is a one hole wonder.
I have a savage .17 w Boyd's stock and love it. We shoot it to 300 yards acuratly w little probs. it's really an amazingly fast little round and it's the one rifle we take to range that everyone fights over lol.
