I have a rem 700 chambered in 30 06, im wanting to build a custom rifle but the caliber i want to do is short action, Is it safe to and feasible to do such a thing. I know the proper thing to do would be to buy a short action but that would add to my cost.

M24SWS is built on a M700LA, even though it's a .308Win. Just a longer bolt throw.

As stated above, there is no problem doing it, but I would be more concerned about resale value.
You might be better off selling the barrreled action here and just picking up a cheap Rem 700 complete rifle from a major sporting goods store.
