Gunsmithing Rebarreling an FN SPR; recommeded gunsmiths?

I'm running a factory FN A3G in .308 and would like to duplicate the rifle in .223 Rem. I've got the action and A3G stock so I'm looking for a smith that can rebarrel the 70 action with a heavy, fluted, 24" tube to match the A3G. Looking for any/all recommendations before I start calling smith's starting with LRI. Thanks!

LRI is always a good choice. In every respect. Work, timelines, price, communications etc. All good, every time.

We are very happy to help. CRF type actions are a specialty here. With the addition of the new milling center we added last fall this kind of work is now a snap. We have a "through spindle" 4th axis that makes for a killer setup with doing extractor cuts to breech faces.

You can literally build your own invoice on our store. Just visit the GS section and select the services you'd like. Once on the floor with all the parts a simple barrel fitting is in/out in 4 days. Fluting, coating, etc adds to the time, but we generally keep 90% of barreled action work to less than 14 days.

Alan Brown, A.J. Brown Arms Co in Bloomfield Indiana has built me several FN SPR based customs over the years. Do a little research and you will find Alan is about the most qualified smith out there.

Alan Brown, (AJ Brown) built a custom FN SPR for me and it’s a tack driver, he’s old school and doesn’t have much of a web presence, but does stellar work.

Having said that, I bought a Sig Kilo 2000 tripod mount from LRI and their customer service and quality of work was outstanding.

Derrick at Horizon Firearms in College Station, Tx did an FN build for me. He had to modify the bottom of the action to take a CDI DBM, trued the action, and hung a Benchmark barrel that was an absolute hammer. Great customer service as well, very clear accurate communication process. I was very happy with the rifle and the transaction, and would do it again in a second!

Gotcha. That should be a CRPF. Not true CRF so no extractor cut is needed. Easy peasy.

Im not very knowledgeable with the FN but been toying with the idea of doing one as well. I was told they don’t offer a 223 bolt/bolt head unless it’s already a 223 from one of their TS tactical models from a few years ago. If anyone can chime in if this is true or not would be great. Sorry to hijack but thought it might be a good question.

Im actually about to pick up an entire gun (FN Tactical Sport) for $500. Maybe someone may want the stock and barrel for $100 and leaves me the action for $400.

The reason I said that is becuse I too planned on purchasing a FN Tactical’s sport in 223 but I was recently told that the 223 TS action won’t fit the A3G stock, which is what I planned on doing as well, so still trying to confirm that. Any help would be appreciated.

The 223 actions were actually the wssm actions not the normal short action. I know there are lot of stuff that isn't interchangeable. The older varmint 223s were short actions though

Ok guys, finally returned and the stock FN TSR .223 Rem rifle WILL NOT fit the A3G stock. The barrled action and location of the lug is shorter than the .308 action on the FN and the bottom metal is also shorter in overall length. Unfortunate as I was hoping to get this stocked up to match my A3G but it's a fine rifle and will serve the purpose of a trainer for now. If anyone else has thoughts on getting this FN .223 action in a McMillan or similar stock I'm all ears. Thanks.
