Rechambering my 30/06 in something 6.5 or 7mm... I dont want a barrel burner. I need to to be good to 1k.. What would you guy's pick?? I know there are odvious choices.. .280, 6.5/06. What else is there that would be effective???

You could always do a 6.5x55, very similair to .260 but designed around a long action. Though I do agree with the .280 ackley recommendation, either that or .284 win.

I second that notion.

6.5/06 is a awesome old school easy to load wildcat. Pretty simple to make brass. Ballistic similar to a 260 improved. Also could improve the 6.5 /06. I used one for many years as a groundhog rig. Good bullet selection. Brass readly available from either 25/06 or 270. My .02 cents.

Wow! This post is way to close to what I was just about to make a thread about! I also have a 30-06 that I am thinking about rechambering into either a 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag. This rifle's main use will be hunting and I am also looking to be effective on elk sized game to 1k. I am also looking for opinions so please pm me your ideas.. Don't want to hijack OP's thread.

@OP
What will this rifle be used for? Hunting? Paper punching? Thanks for the post! And I am sure you will like which ever caliber you choose!

What about a 264 win mag?

Re: Rechambering my 30/06...No clue what to choose

Ya! The 284 would be the way to go. 6.5-284 you might get 900 rounds out of a barrel. We have a f-class shooter shooting 284 and he has about 2400 rounds and it still puts them in. He has taken it to 1000 and finished 2nd. in two matches. Might change my LH LA 700 308 build to that myself. His gun shoots Berger 180 hybred.

Re: Rechambering my 30/06...No clue what to choose

6.5-06 Ackley was my choice. Have shot berger vlds to 965 yds. It is amazing when 400 use to be a stretch. This site and many $$ later the fun is just beginning for me.

Re: Rechambering my 30/06...No clue what to choose

I'd suggest a 24", 1:9" twist medium varmint weight barrel chambered in .280 Rem.

Hornady Superformance 139SST loads should anchor pretty much any of the non-dangerous game in North America, and handloaded bullet weights of between 150 and 168gr will stabilize and run supersonic to 1Kyd and somewhat beyond in handloads. I'm examining Noslers in these weights and they shoot well. There's no need to go with heavier .30's and tolerate their added recoil.

Beyond the barrel change no other mods are needed and it should feed precisely the same as the '06.

I am not a fan of the Ackleys; not because they don't work better, because they do.

My main point about the Ackleys is that for them to work better, they need to loaded up around max, or they don't deliver their expected better potential.

At a reduced load level, there's no point to having them, and especially not any reason for going out of one's way to do the work that allows the rifle to digest them.

I don't like max loads, and I especially don't like max loads in a cartridge that already has boosted performance. IMHO that's a perfect recipe for exactly what you don't want, a barrel burner.

Re: Rechambering my 30/06...No clue what to choose

My vote is 280 AI shooting 180 SMK's...
Inexpensive brass, great bullets, can shoot off the shelf 280's in a pinch... Like the others, it will feed from AI mags.

Enjoy

Re: Rechambering my 30/06...No clue what to choose

Compare ballistics of 7m/m and 6.5m/m bullets.
140 grain vld class 6.5m/m bullets perform like a heavier 175-180 grains 7m/m bullet. You might feel like building a 6.5x55 for less recoil and similar performance.
However, I've loaded for 280 Remington and was impressed with the round's all around characteristics.

Smith: 264WM requires the larger magnum bolt face. No go.

Re: Rechambering my 30/06...No clue what to choose

I have both the 6.5x55 and the 284. I had the 6.5x284s and loved them but the barrel life sucks!!!

6.5x55 is great and very accurate with good barrel life if you don't push them hard. My 284 is a "HAMMER" its the most accurate long range rifle I own. I shoot the 162AMAXs and love them.

My soninlaw has a 280 and its also a great round. No matter which one you choose the nice thing is you will be happy with it. They are all great rounds. Its a win win situation for you!!
