Trying to figure out how to go about my 700 build. I currently have a McMillan A4 and on the spec sheet it says the inlet is for a 0.312 recoil lug. If I were to hypothetically drop in a regular off the shelf Remington 700 5R barreled action with the factory size lug, would there be an adverse effects in having that extra space? I believe the factory size is 0.1875. I recall somebody telling me it would be alright but then why do people bed that area? Is the lug supposed to fit snug into the recessed area? If I were to replace the factory lug with a thicker one would I need to do machine work to the barrel because of the effects to headspace etc?
