Recommend a dual purpose buttstock

Im hoping to find a buttstock that will go on a M4 buffer tube for varmint/precision use. The reason Id like it to go on a M4 tube is so I can use the lower for different uppers. Id like to just put the money into one lower and build a few uppers, but the stock is what has been holding me back from that.

If there is no such beast, what about a good stock that works well for both precision/varmint use with a 24" bull barrel, and also works well for carbine type use.

Im just now finally getting into the black guns and appreciate any advice.

Magpul ACS is my suggestion.

Sopmod dosnt work well from prone if using your offhand for support on the buttstock.

Vltor EMOD has the wisker pincher problem

I like that, and in checking it out I found the Magpul UBR, I am really liking that stock even though it appears to replace the buffer tube it looks like it would work equally well on a carbine as it would on a prone rifle setup.

If you're going to use anywhere between a rifle-length and carbine-length gas system, the Vltor A5 along with it's proprietary buffer wouldn't be a bad idea...

Another Magpul UBR here, they lock up like no other adjustable stock. The PRS is a great stock also but it wouldn't work great for both.

UBR does lock up better but I find the ACS to be wider like the sopmod which provides a better cheek weld.

Regarding the lock up I find it to be a non issue when prone and loading the bipod. Its a bit lighter as well which may or may not be a good thing depending on how the rifle is balanced. The added weight of the UBR may be prefered with a longer/heavy barrel.

Either would be a good choice depending on which feature ranks higher.

I carry an M4 all day, every day, 335 days a year. I'm tall (6'3") and need a long LOP to shoot properly. While an adjustable buttstock does come in handy when getting in/out of vehicles, mine is either fully extended (slick) or one notch in (with full kit). The use of a collapsible buttstock just isn't necessary for some shooters and can actually be a hindrance when shooting for precision. When not at work I get no benefit from a collapsible buttstock, but your application might differ.

To keep my rifle versatile for both myself and my wife to shoot it I tried the UBR on my MK12 at home, but it just didn't provide the proper cheek weld I need to shoot precision. I'm switching it over to a PRS, putting the UBR on a carbine .308 I'm building, and getting rid of the cheating wife.

The UBR is heavy though, so if you're looking for a stock for rapid multiple target engagements or carrying all day when in carbine mode, I would not recommend it. It's a fine stock, but it has it's place.

Depending on your body structure and shooting style, keep your optics low and you can get away with either. However just like the different models of bolt gun stocks, you have to try them out for yourself to find what's right for your own application and body structure.

B5 SOPMOD STOCK

These were Army selected to replace LMT and are more affordable than LMT.

The SOPMOD profile gives a great cheek weld. The Vltor E-mod would also provide a good cheek weld as would the I mod which is smaller.

<span style="font-weight: bold">If you have a stock tube to put it on you may have to go the Vltor route as they are available in civilian tube models. The SOPMOD style are Colt Military style tube compatible models only.</span>

I'd say go with a UBR or ACS. The ACS has a better cheekweld than the UBR but I don't know how it feels while prone. I have a UBR on my carbine and love it. It feels great as an all-around stock and it's not too bad while prone either. The PRS is a great stock when shooting prone, but it just doesn't seem practical for any other use. Try to find a local store that has the UBR and ACS and handle rifles with those two stocks on them and see which one you prefer. UBR or ACS; after that it's just personal preference.

Larue makes a cheekweld for the CTR that also works with the UBR.

I had the same predicament a few months back. I currently have a CTR on my lower which is perfect for me on my carbine. But I had some concerns when I built my Mk12 style upper. However to my surprise with the KAC unimount the CTR allowed a perfect sight picture through the scope.

That being said I would like to upgrade to a UBR in the future, but for the time being the CTR has performed well.

My LMT MWSE came with the SOPMOD stock, and I find the release lever too easily accdientally activated by the way I like to hold the rear bag in place.

Which of the stocks discussed above would fit my LMT without changing its carbine length buffer tube?

But, even if the UBR comes with the tube it needs, it would require breaking the staking on my LMT, and I really would rpefer to not do that. So, it sounds like I should take a look at the CTR and ACS.

I've swapped out 2 LMT factory carbine buffer tubes, not impossible, but not a lot of fun either.

Magpul does have some new carbine stocks that just came out, just so you get the Milspec version. Looks like MOE, CTR, STR, ACS, ACS-L.

Like others have said, UBR all the way. I have 2, one on my Mega 308 and one on my 6.8. I do have the CTR on my SBR but guarantee once a can gets thrown on I'll be buying a 3rd UBR.

After examining photos and feature lists for the Magpul CTR and the Magpul ACS, and also the Larue combo of RISR (cheek piece)plus CTR, I have to say that a plain CTR strikes me as just too spartan in terms of cheek weld.

It looks to me like the Magpul ACS or Larue RISR+CTR would be more comfortable.

How would either of these compare to my current SOPMOD in terms of:

- Cheek weld?

- Lack of slop in the lockup?

- Range in length of pull?

- Length of stock in fully compressed position? (my rifle case is short and so soemthing MUCH longer than the SOPMOD wouldn't fit)

I hate to mess with the rifle much (it works so well for me right now), but that exposed lever on the SOPMOD is is exactly the wrong spot for the way I use the stock and rear bag.

Im in the same boat. I ordered the ACS. I to am hoping its real close to the Sopmod as the cheek weld is perfect as is the LOP adjustments.

Another vote for the UBR here. It's an awesome piece of work. Wish I could afford to put them on all my AR's.
