I'm looking at a new pack, specifically eberlestock packs but need some advice/suggestions. Without being able to get my hands on any of these packs I can only go off of the pictures on the website and Internetz regarding size and features.

Currently, I'm using a Maxpedition Malaga GearSlinger as my range bag, and while it's a good pack, i tend to find myself needing a little more room.

I shoot IDPA once a month, so I haul at least 2 guns, mags, holsters, mag pouches, ammo and whatever else I may need. The pack works pretty well for this, but again find myself needing a bit more room. When, I go to the range with long guns and handguns, 90% of the time I end up taking a Second Bag to haul the extra gear.

I was looking at the Eberlestock Gunslinger and gunslinger II as well as the X3 lo-drag. I would like to have a rifle scabbard on the back. But will need to be able to fully enclose the rifle so i can use it as an extra case on the way to the range.

The pack would be used for everyday use, traveling, and as a range bag. I would like to use the scabbard as a case so when i go back to my hometown for a day or two i can just grab one pack, with a rifle and handgun and ammo. Just be easier to throw it all in one thing and carry that out to the truck.

So my questions are, how much bigger are these packs from what I'm currently Using? Would they fit my needs? or are there other models to consider?

When I shoot IDPA i'm constantly in and out of my pack for mags/ammo, so accessibility is a plus.

ETA: Reason for the period, I can't start posts on the PC at work. The buttons, don't work, so i created the topic, on my phone then edit it on the pc. No way, i'm typing all that out on my phone....

Re: Recommend a new pack/range bag

I have nearly the exact same question as the OP. Looking at the GS2 or the LoDrag. No shops in sight carry these so I can't test drive one. I am shooting a Savage 12 LRP and am considering the Eberlestocks for a range bag to replace my Midway drag bag that barely fits my rifle. Any suggestions?

Call Ceylon over at deltaoutdoorsman.com and he can go over the different styles and dimensions with you. He''s awesome to deal with and knows his packs.

Re: Recommend a new pack/range bag

I have been looking at the Gearslinger II for my stuff as it has the front access vs top access on the gearslinger (at least thats the impression I got my gouge may be wrong). Easy access was important to me.

Currently I utilize a 5.11 Rush 72 as my range bag and shooting IDPA I have never filled it and I usually bring extra gear for shooters that forget things I also always carry medical gear. This bag has also served well as a range bag with everything for precision shooting fitting in it quite well. The only issue I have had with it is I broke part of the buckle for the chest strap (which was completely my fault I picked up the bag by the little chest strap when it was rather heavily loaded) I easily fixed this with a little para cord otherwise this bag is rock solid.

The GS2 has both front and top access.

Re: Recommend a new pack/range bag

+1 on the gunslinger, have had mine for somewhere in the area of 4 years. Made many trips backcountry for mulies and elk, holds up very well to busting brush and survived an angry packmule mauling with no major problems. Holds more than enough gear and is comfortable for a not framed pack when heavily loaded.

Re: Recommend a new pack/range bag

ive got a x3 lo drag on order from ceylon. i think this pack will be just the right size for what i need. i think id try to put to much unneeded stuff in one of the gunslinger packs.

I'm 6'4" and the 5.11 rush 72 fits. It has a lot of organizational pockets built in it so you don't have to add extra heavy pouches. Long pockets on the side are great for bipods and water bottles.

I had the G2 and got rid if it...to me it's not that great of a designed pack.
1. Does not fit tall guys
2. When it falls over, full of heavy gear it lands on the sunglasses pocket.
3. The compression straps compress the small side pockets where the water bottle goes. They could have moved the strap up 2" and fixed this
4. It sounds great to have your rifle in your pack during a match but after loading up the pack then sliding your 13lb rifle in, its way more comfortable to just carry it or sling it..
5. The 30 round mag pockets are in the lid making it very heavy and the weight is far from the center line of your back where it should be. And this is what crushes your sunglasses.
6. With a rifle in you have to hold up the heavy lid with one hand to get into the top of the bag. With a rifle out it will flop over and out of the way.
7. No real easy access pockets, anything in the main compartment you have to release to straps, zip it open.

Re: Recommend a new pack/range bag

Lots of big, expensive options have been listed here.

I paid 40 bucks for my midway range bag. Big enough to carry all the bullshit you'd need at the range and more. and less than half the price of big name brands.

I did notice the la police gear 3 day pack. I own that too. Another 30 dollar piece of gear that would be 120 if it said 5.11 on the side. Great bag.

I would highly recommend trying both of these out.

Re: Recommend a new pack/range bag

Some good info here, while some suggestions have me scratching my head. It is always a benefit to see different options, designs & price points when it comes to evaluating range/shooting/match gear, but sometimes I'll read something & have to bite my tongue...

Before you make a decision one way or another, give me a ring. Along with being an Eberlestock dealer, I also handle a bunch of other brands (some mentioned here, some not) that have items worth considering. You're certainly not obligated to purchase from me, but I've helped a multitude of shooters in making this exact decision. Worst case is I can give you some options to consider & give you some straight scoop on whether a particular piece of gear is a good choice for YOU or not...

Regardless, best of luck to you & hope to be of assistance.

Ceylon, I probably should have called to discuss before I ordered but, sometimes i get impatient and just order away. Anyway, I received my pack yesterday, So far i'm impressed with it. I used it to haul a laptop and other stuff to work this am. I'll be using it as a range bag this weekend so we'll see how it works for me. I think the x3 will be the ticket, with the addition of a couple molle pouches in just the right spots It should fit all my needs.

I know you said eberlestock but check out the Mystery Ranch Dragon Slayer, the tri zip is awesome!

Anything by Mystery Ranch is great, they'll make it fit you perfectly and they have an absolutely unconditional lifetime guarantee. Had one of their packs that was destroyed by shrapnel and they gave me a brand new one! It'll cost you but you'll never have a complaint!

Also to anyone tall (6'5" mentioned) this will work great I'm 6'2" and I have at least 6 inches left that the frame can be lengthened.
