Recommendations for a Mount on AR10

Guys, I would like input on the best optic mounting solution on an AR10 NM (Heavy Barrel). I see individual tactical rings on some and the integrated (Larue type) mounts on others and I see advantages to both. What are you guys running on your big bore AR's for a long range optic (not CQB). Gun will be shot off a bench and prone with a bipod and PRS stock ... Mostly target work and perhaps a hunting trip at some point (although the gun is a bit heavy for that).

I've got a set of high tactical IOR rings that are steel with holes under them for weight reduction. For the money they were hard to beat. very sturdy and I can even pickup the rifle from the scope's body like it was a handle. It's never budged after hundreds of rounds and dozens of trips to the range in Lowseyana and N. Mexico

I have your exact same setup and have a SS HD 5-20 in a Burris PEPR mount. There is better, but works just fine for what I do.. which is a range gun.. not a working tool. If it were for work, I'd probably go with something made from steel with quick release. If it's just going from safe-car-range and back.. the PEPR is a decent mount. The Armalite mount is nice too from what I read and they now have a new model that sits a bit higher than before so you can get back-up's to fit under the rear ocular piece of most scopes. The older version only allowed slim rear flip-ups.

Have done testing on Badgers, Burris, GGGs, Leups, Trijis, etc over the past few years. All were adequate for pretty rugged use when placed + torqued correctly, and EVERY single setup needed to be lapped regardless of $$. If you're really going to beat the rifle up and plan on removing/installing a lot with a QD, I would lean toward the mounts with twin throw levers (like Killshot mentioned with the ADs) as opposed to a single with a torque bar (GGG, Wilson). most of the double throws spread torque over entire length of the rail section, a lot (not all) of the single levers do not... Ultimately people buy on the "I heard" and "my buddy said" principle, unfortunately . But those I mentioned are some aspects you may consider when you go shopping. best of luck.

Great information and really appreciated!. It seems that most agree that the forward offset mounts are the way to go? I want solid lock up on the rail so dual levers makes sense. I am definitely going to look closer at the AD product. I didn't actually realize there were that many choices out there. Yes ... I'm a noob!

Big fan of precision ARs, Big fan of ADM Recon X mounts.

Been using them now for several years, have thoroughly vetted their RTZ ability, and have dealt with the wonderful people behind these mounts on a few occasions.

There is a handful of great mounts these days like Bobro, and Larue, however my money will continue to go to ADM.

Haven't seen them up close, but BAT Machine is making some great looking rings these days. Their reputation for machining is outstanding in their actions so might be worth a look. Plus they are only 115$ for a set. pretty awesome price !!

I can't say that I disagree with you on that. If the regular price was $350 I could see paying that for a solid QD mount but $500 is quite a stretch.

Same here. I choose parts based on materials and design, not the name. Almost every part I am using is from a different brand. I haven't tested it yet, as my build is not complete, but I don't expect it to disappoint.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Considering recommendations, price and overall appeal, I thing I am going with the AD Recon . I am running Leupold rings currently but like the idea of a QD mount with forward bias. Great info from all.

I've removed it and re-attached a dozen times or more and have yet to have an issue with returning to zero. I keep the screws very tight to ensure the mount stays solid and the levers are tight as hell when attaching and detaching.

I don't have a $350 mount but I would try it if:

1) I had the spare money

2) Were putting it on a 3 to 4 thousand dollar rifle/scope combo and

3)removed the scope to use irons or another scope frequently.

None of the best stuff is cheap, so why knock it? Its tested and proven to have crazy accurate Return To Zero.



That being said, right now my broke ass uses a QD Larue SPR mount and have tested it(barely). Only at 50 yards so far, with a cheap 16" barrel in 5.56 and cheap 55gr ammo.

First two shots are top left, top right. Removed and remounted the SPR and shot the third/bottom shot. <span style="text-decoration: underline">Works for me and what I use this rifle for</span>. I'm always removing the scope and <span style="text-decoration: underline">only use it out to about 200</span>. Atlas was only on to shoot the target

Target has 1" squares. Small center diamond is 1/4"

From the RTZ report I would say the GDI is probably the best QD out there. If Lowlight said it is what they say it is then I believe him, he seems to shoot the shit straight. Non QD probably SPUHR

If you don't need "the best" then get what one of us have: ADM, BOBRO, Larue... They seem to work pretty damn good, probably not the best but maybe "best for the money" if thats what you were after.

If you don't plan on having BUIS or won't be needing to remove your primary scope then get some good rings, Badger etc. or a NF Unimount

I have seen the videos of trident1982 shooting steel from long range and if he says the ADM returns really close to dead center after removing it then I'd be inclined to believe that also.

Well then. the "best" would be a rock solid pair of thick, steel, single block cut, set of "old fashioned" clamp-on rings lapped and torqued eh? Easy, reliable and bulletproof strong.

I was just trying to help him, posted a lot of info for him too but you on the other hand can <span style="text-decoration: line-through">eat a dick</span>. Sorry if I misinterpreted what he wrote when I posted my first comment on what I thought was THE BEST mount out there for what he wanted.

The main reason I re-posted was because of your comment on $350 being too much for the best. Then I added some of my experience with a less expensive mount since it seemed he might be leaning that way.

EDIT: I scratched through it, was a little harsh. Was only pointing out my reasoning for suggesting the GDI. Wasn't even trying to be condescending, was only pointing out the facts of his original question.

I had a never been mounted before Bobro, sold it and kept my Larue...

After I sold it I heard (no proof that I have actually seen) that the Bobro is better at return to zero than the Larue. Yep, feel like an idiot for not trying both out at the range, at least out to 100 yards before I sold the Bobro

It is just such a good mount, and yes, it returns to zero better than any mount I have used plus it can take a REAL beating. The lever is also so crisp, and seems to get better the more it is used.

I did a variant solution a bit different than others have coevred above.

I originally mounted my Nightforce 56mm scope to my LMT MWSE via Nightforce 1.5" (highest they offer) lightweight rings.

Still too low because of my face cheekbones to allow a proper view through the scope.

So, I inserted a Larue QD riser between the rings and the rifle.

That gave me an extra 5/8" height, which is PERFECT. It also gives me quick disconnet capability, which is great because I can dismount the scope for cleaning the rifle, for using open sights, or to place the entire assembly (riser, rings, scope) on a different rifle if I get another rifle.

Larue says the return to zero is "absolute" if you adjust the tension of the 2 levers per their insructions (easy). I have only used the rifle at the rnage once in this configuration so far, so cannot attest to that "absolute" return to zero, at least yet, but Larue's reputation IS good.

I'll throw in an option no one has mentioned yet, the Warne RAMP mount. While it isn't a a QD mount it has 1/2 dual nuts for good torquing to rail.

I first seen this mount in Leupy's catalog when they came out with the Delta Point and was intriqued. The mount has a cantilever style to it with removable left and right 45 offset rails. I bought mine to give it a try with a MRD.

I set my Mega MA-Ten Mono up more as an SPR/do it all rifle and not neccessarily a precission rig. While you're intended purpose is mostly prone shooting this may not be the best mount. For hunting applications, the MRD works nicely. I can leave my scope set at higher power and transition over to MRD without much work.

Just someting to consider that hasn't been stated yet.

On my other AR I have Badger rings with a Burkett Gen 2 offset mount for the Docter red dot. The knobs on my Burris are huge so I had to mount it like it is but still works great.

So thats an example of another option which is kind of like what sgtbutt mentioned with the Warne RAMP shown here

You need one anyways but if you will be taking off the Warne mount or removing and remounting your scope with regular rings you need a torque wrench. It will help with your return to zero to torque the cross bolts the same each time.

MP, what size scope do you plan on using? If its huge like my 6-24x it is nice to have the red dot option with rings. I don't plan on removing the scope but the fact that it only goes down to 6x is not cool just in case something needs to be shot in low light at close range. That rifle will mainly be for shooting paper, steel and for long range hunting.

On the other hand on my 5.56 I have a 1-4x and take it off all the time to use the irons. Its setup for the house, truck and short range running game.

Hell just start building 2 rifles now, you're going to anyways haha.

leaves about enouth room to slide 5 sheets of paper between the bell and the forend...
