Recommendations or thoughts on 1st bolt gun 22LR

I know these threads are posted all the time. Looking for something I can shoot from the bench, prone and take out to distance (past 100 yards with accuracy). Want to punch paper, shoot steel, and maybe do a NRL22 match. Also something my 9 and 11 year old daughters can learn on. Would like to get spend $800-1000 on just the rifle. Options I have been considering: Area 419 complete CZ 457 fully loaded, Bergara B14r, CZ 457 pro varmint plus aftermarket barrel. Also something that will eat mid grade ammo (CCI SV) without issues. For glass I am thinking Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56.
Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.

Either will work just fine. Your daughters will have to grow into one. That will happen sooner than you can imagine. You can throw the Tikka T1X in there as well.

Your choice of glass is just great. Base choice should be 30 moa. The scope is heavy and you may wish to put it on the Bergara. This will balance everything out and be real heavy compared to the other two.

CCI will not be supper great. SK Standard Plus, SK Long Range Match and SK Rifle Match as well as Lapua Center X may be some of your best bets for ammunition. Anything else will be good for the girls to learn with.

My bergara shoots CCI great at 50 yards, but out to 100 starts to fall off. Can't comment on the others because I haven't shot or held them, but have loved shooting my bergara so far. Good luck!

I have the Bergara and the PV. With a 1000 budget I would grab a Bergara for what you will be doing. Just take the spacers out for the kids. If you go with the PV don’t count the factory barrel out as mine shoots very well.

Thanks to all who replied. It is much appreciated. This is a great forum to learn on and has a wealth of information. Sounds like the Bergara has gone to the front of the pack for a rifle in the 1K price range. I will keep checking back if anyone else has thoughts or advice...

Everything I have received from Area 419 has been top notch. My only question is what do they mean by "Threaded Barrel" is it treaded for a suppressor? Or do they get rid of the slip fit and the thread is at the receiver. Anyway the only thing I could add to the CZ end is that mine loved SK red box and the Long Range it was I could hang with more expensive rifles with everything inside 150-200. When Bscar (https://triggersbyscar.com) makes a 457 trigger put that in there! If you go that route.

There is a lot of options triggers, chassis etc, for the 700 based rifles ( Vudoo et al) and that might be an advantage.

Spartan - Noted. My thoughts were to just get them started pulling the trigger safely with something that has low recoil/minimal noise before I dedicated more cash for there own personal gun. My 11 year old is right around 5'4" so I suspect she could get behind something with an adjustable LOP and cheek riser. My 8 year old is still a shorty so yes it may be a problem. But if they show interest then yes I have no problem with something just for them. Otherwise thoughts on a decent rig for my girls?

Get one for each of the girls so they don't loose interest. Should you have just one gun for both and they are shooting someone will get left behind and become dis interested. Dad take the time for them rather than all of you together at the same time at first. Later you can take time for yourself as well. Let them shoot.

CZ has a little scout that is something to look at. Excellent accuracy with a stock that will fit the girls. Light and maneuverable. Ruger has the precision. Ruger has some 10/22 rifles that are colored for the girls as well. For that matter the Tikka T1x can be shortened up quite well and it is very accurate. Could purchase 2 of them for $1000 plus background check and tax.

Get the kids a lever gun.

Take them shopping, let them have a play with the display models and ask them what kind of rifle they liked the most.

Most kids I’ve seen will almost fight each other over the bl22 and standing offhand with iron sights will serve them much better as an early training tool than a scoped bolt action.

I got my Bergara B14R yesterday, and took it out today. It took about 150 to 200 rounds to start shooting. Winding day to shoot, but I did shoot hand full of 1/4" groups at 50 yds. Split a few playing card and cut match stick at 50yds. Moved to 100yds on steel. I have spinner set with 1"gong that is 1/2" thick turned on edge. I have 3 stacked for a 1.5" target, then 2 - for a 1"target, then a 1/2" target. The pic is my KYL with 5/8" down to 3/16". Both are made the same. I could hit the 1/2" with ease at 100yds and the 3/16" at 50yds.
The B14R is a heavy gun and seats steady on the bench with Bi-pods. Great gun.

I shot Wolf match target, and Match Extra. SK match rifle shot he best group 0.180". SK long range shot good also. I was surprised Norma Tac 22 shot great. and Norma Match both shoot some of the 1/4" groups. I shot Tac 22 and Wolf MT at 100yds.
I have EGW 20 moa base, Vorex Viper HST 6 X24 in Burris Sig. ZEE ringes

Awesome! Thanks for the information. I will jot this down as I am leaning toward the Bergara.. I like the black color scheme better but it seems most people have the greenish hue...

Thanks for all of the information!!! Looks like I have some reading to do on the ammo. I know every gun is likely specific to what it likes.... I have been keeping my eyes on the ammo situation. These are strange times we are in. I figured 22lr would be a fun way to still be able to shoot since 9mm and 5.56 are gone as fast as they are posted. I have 5k rounds of 22lr at the moment (CCI SV, agile) but no match ammo. I will start to purchase the ammo you recommended above. I really appreciate you taking the time for such a thurough reply. Seems like there are good folks on this forum...

To get the girls interested, a Ruger Precision Rimfire with a red-dot could work. Super adjustable to fit them and the red dot optic makes it super fun to hit steel without all the issues around eye relief with scopes. Down the road, you could put a scope on it when they want to test their skills at longer distances.

I have a bergara that I really like, but for the kids I'd get each of them a Tikka or CZ with a stock to fit them or even a Savage MkII, it's fine for them learning to shoot. My savage shoots almost as well as my Bergara for accuracy. Get some Krylon and sponges and let the kids paint the stocks in their choice of colors for fun. Built 10/22's for my nephews, with a mil hash scope they can dial. They don't even want to shoot at 50 yards anymore, they like shooting the steel chickens on the steel range at 200 meters. . No one told them that most people don't shoot a 22 that far.

I love my Tikka t1x and when she lets me borrow it, the wifes CZ 457 PRS . IMO I would buy these over and over and over again.

Norma match 22lr shots amazing out of both... although the cheap browning ammo shoot the best out of my Tikka.

CarbonMTN...you have the Tikka in a chassis? If not are you able to get a decent cheek weld or did you put a cheek riser on there? What glass are you running on the yours and your wife's gun?

Tikka is in a krg bravo, love it! And it’s running the vortex diamondback tac 6-24x50 FFP.

That is why I am still possibly leaning towards the Bergara. Seems everyone who gets the tikka puts it in a chassis right away which puts it around $800. That is why I have been looking at the Bergara. The midline cz's are hit or miss from everything I have read on here. Otherwise I was looking the the 457 At-One...just for the adjustable LOP and cheek riser...

To each his own. The factory stock on the tikka was fine (was factory stock for almost a year) I just wanted the tacticool look. I also have the Magpul hunter on my 10/22 didnt need it but it has it.
