Hi Team - I am new to using the Ak platform and just absolutely love it. Would love to stock pile some ak ammo. Can someone educate me on diff types of ammo out there from low, mid to high end. Pros/cons for each. What is your recommended ammo to stock for SHTF type of situation.

thanks for sharing your knowledge and assistance.

Honestly, whatever you can find at this point. Steel cased stuff around 0.40/rd is a good price for current times. Barnaul is good stuff. Wolf is dirty but I’ve never had any function issues with it. Golden tiger is very good and pretty accurate for AK food but I haven’t seen any in a couple years.

For longer term storage I like to look for cartridges with sealed necks and primers. Preferably made by Barnaul or Vympel.
I’ve put a few rounds of golden tiger, wolf laquered, wolf non lacquered, tula non lacquered, and Yugo brass in a bucket of water for 24 hrs and all of shot just fine. I think the lacquered stuff is better for storage considering the other stuff will rust sitting in mags for extended periods. The sealant is just bonus.

If you have a decent ak, ammo quality is of little concern. I’ve got a sam I’ve put a good 15-20k through without issue. Buy a few thousand rounds, store in ammo cans in a good environment(temp, humidity wise) and you’ll be set. The above mentioned brands are good to go.

Barnaul and Golden Tiger if you can find it. They are both the best.
I've also got a bunch of Red Army Standard just because it's in spam cans cause I'm hopping that will it last...
Ammo from Barnaul or Vympel really does seem to be GTG across the board. I wouldn't hesitate if your trying to stock up. Who knows what will happen...

I've got some old Finnish Surplus Sako and Lapua from the 70's that I bought a few years ago cheap from Mid South. Cardboard boxes are falling apart, and it's all tarnished, but it still shoots great.

I would just load up on whatever non-corrosive stuff you can find. I've had good luck with Wolf Military Classic, standard Wolf HP and SP ammo, Tula ammo, and Red Army Standard. I'm sure most of it was made in the same Russian factory though.

I'm probably going to be buying some brass cased Norma ammo soon. They keep emailing me and their prices don't look bad.

Only AK ammo I've ever had give me malfunctions was Norinco, but it's no longer available here.

OP, I've got at least 2500 rounds of Tula HP 123gr sitting in 30cal cans and about another 350 rounds of Red Army ammo in factory boxes. The ammo was purchased new a little over a year ago and has been stored in a climate controlled environment. I recently sold all my AKs and kept the ammo. I'm loaded with ARs and I like the platform much better so I don't anticipate buying another AK anytime soon.

If you're interested in some ammo send me a IM and we can discuss.

extreme fast temp changes do more harm to ammo than anything you will ever do. Store whatever you buy in ammo cans, use plumbers grease on the seals and forget about it.

AKs eat it all, buy what is cheap
