Hi All,

I have a custom 6.5 creedmoor rifle built on MPA chassis, 27 inch patriot valley heavy barrell, timney trigger and TL3 action. Looking to participate in prs matches. Can some experienced guys recommend good factory ammo in 6.5 creed? Thanks for your time and attention !

If you're feeling really patient, you could wait for the results of the Precision Rifle Blog tests:

Looks like it'll come out over the course of the next few weeks. Unfortunately, we're also in a *MASSIVE* ammo shortage, so I'm not sure how much luck you'll have finding *any* kind of match-grade ammo right now. 😅

It's likely going to be dependant on your rifle. I've shot federal, Prime, hornady eldm and berger. The Hornady and the Berger shot much better than the the rest.

Component-wise, one would think that the berger would be best, but the Hornady eldm is a great round.

Get a couple boxes of each and see which one your rifle shoots better.

I can't find any premium factory ammo and my gun shoots Berger 140 g Hybrid Targets, Hornady ELD-Ms, and Fed Premium Berger 135 g hybrid hunters all about the same....which is very good.

Aside from Prime...who I guess will make them to order for you, I can't find any premium 6.5 CM ammo....hell, not sure I could find crap 6.5 CM ammo at this point.

I have shot a lot of the Hornady American Gunner in 6.5 and it shot well out of my gun. The ammo wasn't super consistent, but it got the job done. Most PRS targets are between 3-700 yards and the velocity consistency isn't as big of a deal at those ranges as wind calls and good fundamentals.

This is the answer. I have a gas gun that shoots the Hornady ELDM 120 grain exceptionally well but doesn't like the 140 or 147 at all. I have a bolt that does well with the 120 but does better with the 140. It will likely be gun dependent. Buy a box of as many as you can find and let the gun dictate what it likes best.

I tried for 2 years to build a load that shot better groups that 147 Match.
It never happened.
At this point, the only thing I will gain from hand loading is velocity. 147s are slow...but I can't argue with their performance.

Next barrel I will try hand loading again, but for now...147s are my "Go-To"

i started with the hornady 140 amax and then their 140 eldm. then went with their 147 eldm for the better bc. i never shot it for accuracy on paper at long distance, but i just seemed to get less hits with it, so am going back to their 140 eldm.

Any ammo you can find right now...

But I used Hornady 140 factory ammo and got just shy of 70% hits with a Bergara HMR Pro. On-target skill (placement, not shaking around, etc.) is more important than the greatness of the match ammo at my level of "development". That and if you can run a DOPE on your gun out to 1000 with whatever ammo you choose before any PRS match (instead of winging it based on just an app like me) you'll be better off.

Of course I say all this and with a Biden presidency I'm actually concerned we won't be allowed to do PRS-style matches ever again... or find ammo for it.

I will say that I used the Berger 130 Hybrid back when I competed in PRS matches with a 6.5 Creedmoor. I didn’t do that long, but it seemed like a better fit for the typical distances and scenarios I found myself engaging. But, you might be right … maybe the 140 performs better at 1200 yards.

Hornady prime Berger are all great. Honestly I haven’t found anything that my 65cm doesn’t shoot well. But I’ve only done match grade ammo.

ideally you need to get a box or two of each ammo and see what your stick likes. Or maybe call patriot valley and see what he recommends being he spun the barrel.

realistically buy any you can

Anyone shoot the factory Berger 144 Hybrid ammo against the 140 Hybrid ammo for 6.5 Creed? I’ve only shot the 140s out of my 6.5x47L, but I’m wondering if the 144 factory creed ammo shoots as well as the 140.

I bought a few boxes of each and they shot the same for me. I bought the 144s to load my own, and they are great.

@MinnesotaMulisha Would you be able to measure the CBTO for the 130gr Prime?
2.156" with the Hornady comparator. This is with the Norma 130 Golden Target bullets.

Thanks for the info!

I was under the impression the prime 130gr was the new Sierra 130gr SMK? Have they since moved to the Norma projectile?

You've got that backwards - old prime (or the new stuff, if you get the european option from the group buy) is the Norma brass/projectiles. The new/american stuff is peterson/sierra.
