Does anyone take them, why, do they help, how are they different from protein? Which ones are the best. Sorry I just started and have been taking the PX90 orange, it tastes good. but does it do anything. Thanks for the help guys!!!!

About to try a new one, but recovery protein XR from GNC is reasonably. Priced (for them) and has helped cut down my recovery time. I notice less soreness the next day, and less post workout fatigue while I'm going about daily activities.

I take BCAA's at 10-15g 3-4 times a day and add in 5g glutamine each time , talk g this much now due to meals being a bit further apart and also do to over training , it's helping to prevent muscle loss while dieting , dont feel nearly as fatigued this time around as i did last time when I did not take the sups

JJ what are BCAA's? Might be a hijack but any opinion on leptin supplaments to help with avoid muscle loss when cutting calories? I understand how leptin works and can be affected by heavy calorie cutting and reset with a cheat day but will an over the counter supplament keep it elevated to maintain metabolism?
Disregard the leptin question, found my own answer that its not digested in anything over the counter.

and they make up about 1/3 of the esenital amino acids that are used for building and preserving muscle.
Being that it is an incomplete protein they offer no caloric benifit for the body to use as energy but still protect the body from catibolism when in a big calorie deficit.
No leptin can't be taking unfortunatly or it would be the diet drug of choice , you can manipulate your leptin levels but having schedualed "refeeds" where you basicly have a day that you eat more calories than you do when dieting. On my refeed days i generaly just add in 300-400 g of complex carbs during that day and everything else stays the same , I have seen some people do it with a single meal like on their refeed day they will have a big ribeye steak and potato for dinner followed by half a pan of brownies , that works for som , makes me feel like crap

Definately not kosher, but I find sugar helps me recover faster. Don't be surprised when your gut increases a little though.

That's due to it replacing the burned off glycogen from the workout , alot of guy will mix their BCAA's with a Gatorade so that the sugar aids in the glucose replenishment. It's not a bad thing as long as you don't chase it with fried chicken or potato chips and the sugar isn't to high 30-50 g is plenty

Scivation Xtend during and post work out. Add some Glutamine to it during post work out for best results. A whey protien shake consumed within an hour post work out helps great too for most workouts.

This^. Just get a gallon jug of water from the gas station, put a couple scoops in it and drink this shit all day. Its cheap, it works, and the grape flavor is really good.
I also take a big glass of chocolate milk. I have been using the TruMoo brand. There is no high fructose corn syrup in it.
Spiking your insulin levels immediately post-workout is supposed to be highly anabolic. Not sure how science based this is but unless you have metabolic syndrome it isn't going to hurt.

What PBinWA said...glass of grape juice. Optimum platinum hydrobuilder... they add creatine among other supps to help speed recovery. The chocolate tastes great with milk.

I'm really just getting started in the gym. I have a long way to go. As a beginner (4 mos.) the buggiest turn off is the soreness. I started taking L-glutamine (Promotes Muscle Repair) an hour before workouts, and L-Arginine (Increases Circulation) in the morning with my oatmeal/complex carb. I do the ON protein shake immediately after my workout. I have noticed a distanced difference since starting.

Actually you are off to a pretty good start and using the right supps....a good creatine supplement also aids in the muscle repair process. Also bananas (potassium) are good for combating some of the soreness.

I use organic chocolate milk. It taste good, makes me feel young at heart, and gives me a quick shot of energy after the workout. I also take Glutamine before I go to bed.
Nutrabio chocolate whey isolate protein, creatine, glutamine, banana, strawberries, blueberries and silk blended up for me for post. Tastes great, in fact thats the only reason I work out so I can treat myself to one of these shakes! hahaha..
This is an area I need to learn more about, and I need to put in an order today to get my 10% off from Vitamin Shoppe.
Currrently, I'm taking creatine daily and 2 servings of Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex protein, one with whole milk immediately after the workout. A serving has:
60g protein
14g BCAA's
10g Glutamine & precursors
I'm primarily doing crossfit along with some strength training, and plan to increase the proportion of strength training as soon as I drop a little more body fat. My question is, do I need to be taking BCAA's or glutamine in addition to this? Or other suppliments? I'm comparing it to 2:1:1 Recovery recommended above, it appears to be similar other than having some carbs added.

Several friends of mine are doctors who road race bikes (LOTOJA) and down hill ski like maniacs. They all use Chocolate Milk either as a boost when running low on energy during a race or post-workout. I've been trying it for the last several months and swear by it. My recovery is quick and I dont get super sore after a hard lift/run. When I ski hard my quads get crampped towards the end of the day. I notice if I chug a CM it helps reduce the cramping and allows me to push it a bit longer. Best part is that it cheap and doesnt taste like I licked a dogs butt.
most people are highly deficient in a lot of building blocks, BCAA'a are one of about 4 things that are good. really the only "proven" over and over again things people should focus on trying to keep in their diet are
BCAA's
creatine
protein
glutamine
fish oils
and a good multi-vitamin
you do that and your at a solid BASE LINE
other good natural supplements to look at are L-carnitine, ZMA, HMB, CLA which are all natural things found in food that help promote healthy weight gain, recovery, fat loss, and maintaining testosterone levels. Don't take my word for it, look em up. I take ALL of the above, it isn't cheap but keeping a routine like mine it helps. I also really like anything made my ON and muscle pharm, i'm currently taking assault and bulletproof by muscle pharm and really like them so far. I don't like the spike energy supplements like NoXplode, Jac3d, C4, etc. I like Assault because its much more naturally based and i have no problem doin cardio on it. anyways just some thoughts. Its really hard to overtrain, its really easy to under rest and recover. words to live by.
