Movie Theater "Red Tails" Trailer

Re: "Red Tails" Trailer

I like how they got little details right, like the German fighters doing head-on attacks through the bomber formations.

Trailer looks killer...

Like most movies with aerial dogfighting, there is way too much turning involved. But it looks spectacular when done that way.

No kidding. One of the studios I worked for did "Stealth" while I was downrange. A buddy of mine developed a very elaborate system of animating the aircraft in the Su-27 dogfight sequence that allowed them to actually "fly" them in the 3d environment using a realistic flight model. It was so good they looked into using it for all of the flight animation, allowing the quaternion rotation data to be exported to motion control cockpits the actors sat in so they could actually recreate the flight in the shots. But it was all canned so that the director could get shots that weren't realistic but instead looked "cool." So you have jets doing lots of barrel rolls for no particular reason.

Well, "Memphis Bell" was made in 1990, during the last years of the optical FX age. There was only a small amount of actual aircraft they could film with. Today, with modern digital FX, we can fill the sky with realistic aircraft and show air battles at the actual size and scope that they took place at.

Moreover, all of that fire, explosions and smoke is simulated from fluid dynamics, so it's entirely CG vs filmed footage composited into the shot. Advances in fluid simulation have made all of this possible over the last 10 years or so, making the elements far better integrated and much more realistic overall.

I had the great honor of meeting Tuskegee Airman LTC Julius Jackson in fall 2001, weeks after 9/11, when I was a freshman in college and a C4C in AFROTC.

In his 80s, the man was still quite active in the Illinois Civil Air Patrol.

Damn near everybody who ever wanted to strap on a fighter in the USAF knows the combat record of the 332nd, which is spectacular even before you consider the BS those men had to go through.

I really enjoyed the HBO movie when it came out, and will DEFINITELY be seeing this film.
