Just went to redding from lee. The die is crushing the case right below the neck. Kind of a dimple.

I screwed the die in till it just touched the shell holder like the instructions say.

Only way I can get it to not do it is screw the die out 1/8" away from the shell holder...

Its a lee press and shell holder.

Maybe just need the redding holder?

I don't know if the Reddings are held to tighter tolerances, but I would guess so, vis-a-vis Lee dies.

Also, the OP should makes sure that the blow hole is unobstructed, as well, using a needle or toothpick. I think that the Reddings have one.

Just ruined the die with a stuck case. I can't win. Does purpose made lube really make that much of a difference?

The first case I ran through it didn't dimple though. So was hyd. lock.

Re: Redding FL Die crushing case

Do a search here if you wish for home made lube. The formula I use is: Alcohol (95% Isopropyl or the commercial Solox) 80%, Lanolin 10% and Castor oil 10%. Put it all in a spray bottle and shake like hell. Put 50 to 100 cases in a ziplok bag. Spray 3 or 4 times, seal the bag and roll them around. Empty them out and allow to evaporate the alcohol for 4 or 5 minutes. Size away. No Stickies. Next time only 2 or 3 sprays. Still no stickies. JMHO

Put the die in the freezer over night, squirt it with any penetrating oil when you take it out and then reinstall it and see if you can get the case out, if you haven't wrenched things up too badly, beforehand.

The die's not ruined. You just need one of these Or just make your own with a 1/4-20 tap, a bolt, a washer, and a socket. It'll pull that case right out.

Re: Redding FL Die crushing case

Reddings do have a "blow hole" however, the engineering leaves something to be desired. It seems that at the proper depth for a FL resize on a rockcucker press (at least mine) the "blow hole" is at the height of the lock ring and is blocked.

for the poster, the blow hole is to let out excess lube so you don;t get the dent. I bet yours is covered by the lock ring also. Other than drilling a new hole, I don;t think I can do much about it. Proper lube and proper amount are the way to go.

"Does purpose made lube really make that much of a difference?"

It's not that proper lube is 'purpose made', it's just that it has to be something with very high film strength and you just found out how important that is. Noobs tend to lube the heck outta the neck, shoulder and upper body but neglict the lower body. That needs to be reversed; cases stick at the bottom, not the neck.

Changing the brand of shell holder won't affect what happens at the case shoulder.

Re: Redding FL Die crushing case

Had the same troubles as you did using Imperial Lube. As others stated keep the die clean and use the lube very sparingly, also you need to keep the lube away from the neck.

Re: Redding FL Die crushing case

I use the Dillon spray stuff. When I first started reloading I used to much and got those dimples that you are describing. It didn't take long for me to get the "feel" of how much to use; I don't get those dimples anymore.
