Reloaded .308

Re: Reloaded .308

Assuming that you are buying the bullets in 500ea qty (and no allowance for shipping) here is what you would be looking at:

168gr SMK: .31ea
Powder (assumes 42gr charge and $22 per lb w/tax): .13ea
Primer (assmes purchasing 1000ea at approx $3 per 100): .03

That puts you at $.47ea with no allowance for the initial cost of your brass. Realistically with shipping and other variance you are looking at $.50-$.60 per round.

That's probably a more realistic "todays cost". I bought my stuff in a lot of bulk before the huge price jumps.

Re: Reloaded .308

Good to know. I was just thinking of pricing this out due to starting my first 308 build. I already reload for a variety of pistol calibers and have that down pat.

Where is everyone ordering their 308 bullets from?

Midway is my huckleberry. I'm not really loyal to a place yet so that's who I use to keep me in 175 HPBT's.

I try to refrain from checking figures. It might make me feel guilty about how much I shoot.

Re: Reloaded .308

I load JLK match ammo for about .60 a round, depending on the life/cost of the brass. So .47-.52 per round for 168s is realistic. It's not cheaper to shoot factory match ammo, but at $18 a box it's close enough to make you scratch your head a bit.

Re: Reloaded .308

Here's a comparison.

Federal 150gr .308 factory ammo from Walmart 15.95 for 20 (and that's really cheap for ammo) .... 100 = 80+ bucks

100 Reloads

100 Hornady 150gr FMJ bullets 21.00
Accurate Powder 2520 1 lbs 20.00 (good for several 100)
100 .308 win once fired brass 25.00 (one time purchase)
100 CCI large rifle primers 3.50
Total= 69.50
Reloaded Ammo = .69 cents each

Next batch of 100 reloads

100 Hornady 150gr FMJ bullets 21.00
Accurate Powder 2520 1 lbs 00.00 (already have some)
100 .308 win brass 00.00 (already have some)
100 CCI large rifle primer 3.50
Total= 24.50
Reloaded Ammo= .25 cents each

And, that's not even figuring in large purchase discounts on bullets, brass, powder and primers. You can't afford NOT to reload.

Re: Reloaded .308

It’s actually a bit more complicated since you pretty much have to include the cost of the brass.

The flip side is if you buy factory match ammo and they use the brass that you are already using for reloading, you do recoup some of your cost since you inherit that once fired brass. A good example would be SW 308 that use Win brass. Not saying reloading is not a cheaper route but the math is more complicated than what it seems at first blush.
