I have a savage elite precision 338 lapua and just starting to reload my own ammo. I have Hornaday brass, vihtavuori 20n29 powder, Hornaday 285 gr. ELD-X and 300 gr sierra HPBT matchkings, and planning federal 215m primers when I'm able to find some. Any suggestions where I should start with powder? I was going to start at 90 gr. And go from there. Just looking for some good advise of where to start.

That is a really slow powder for .338LM I shoot 300 SMK and Bergers with Retumbo or N570 I just happen to have both. I have shot the 285"s in the past using H-1000.
With what you have I would use the 300SMK's. I would think 88 to 90 would be a go place to start.
If you can I would look at 29N41 it shows a load in the vihtavuori reload data. I didn't see anything for 20n29

Thanks for the advise! Ffl is hoping to get some retumbo for cheap in the near future, thats what I was planning on but got 20n29 first. Just didn't want to blow a barrel up, being my first reloading experience riflewise.

Ramshot LRT is easy to get, is a bit on the slow side, but not too slow. If you’re newish to reloading it might be an easier powder to work with.

General rules about powder burn rates: you need slower powders for bigger cartridges and heavier bullets.

I made a very accurate load with 285 elds and 24n41. I use 94.6 grains.

My best load at a mile uses 100 grains of LRT. My buddy’s rifle likes Retumbo. We also tried H1000, Re25, and Re33.

I run a AI AXMC 29in 1.9.3 barrel and I use 3 different powders
For 250's and 285's I use H1000.
For 300gr bullets I use Retumbo or N570
300gr 90.5 Retumbo AVG FPS 2786, SD 6.4
300gr 89.5 N570 AVG 2777 , SD 7.1
